That's a good site.
But you will pay half that if you source one locally. They are easy to transport, because an r1 is small and only weighs 60kg. I brought mine back in the footwell of my clio!

Just been directed to this forum from the Pistonheads site, as I have been considering exactly this project.

Very helpful response to my questions from the guys at Z-Cars - there is a full-build DVD by them coming out in March, as well as an article in next month's Which Kit magazine.

Hope you don't mind me lurking and picking up some tips while I decide what to do!

Cheers,

Tony

hanbrake issue is solved by two sets of in-board brakes - one pair for foot brake and one for handbrake.

Still haven't solved reverse yet!!!! But a small price to pay in a pushable car!
Am thinking of using a starter motor to make it reverse, if a little slowly.

Just wondering; is it permissible to use a line-lock type of kit on the foot brake circuit to act as a parking brake? Would eliminate the need for extra calipers...

Any ideas?

Just out of interest how many bike engined minis are there now? i must have seen seven or eight people on different forums saying that they are doing one. or does anyone know how many kits have been sold by z-cars? it would be interesting to get a ballpark figure on how many are around.

For a parking brake, some production car rear calipers have dual activating pistons.

Hydraulic for braking, and an attachment for a parking brake cable, all in one caliper.

Example:
GM part numbers 15251481/15251482 are left/right calipers that are designed this way.

I'm not sure which cars all use this caliper, but I know there are a few.

Ah, good point - My old R21 Turbos had an arrangement like this...never worked from one MoT to the next though

Rear brakes have now been changed to outboard setup using granada calipers. This eliminates the need for two calipers. Handbrake is built into the caliper.

handbrakes have to be mechanical in operation and seperate from the normal braking system, and provide 25% of the force in an emergency(i think!)........so basically hydraulic handbrakes on a road car are a no-no!

Yep hanbrake is sorted with the new calipers and is not hydraulic.
And there are a couple of ways to solve reverse.
I have got a high torque starter motor driving a sprocket. Z-cars now include my setup in the kit for extra cost.

The other option is using the gearbox from rallysportreplicas.co.uk which costs a frickin fortune but is a real cracking soloution.

Mine will go everywhere once I've done it!
