Hi Jay. Flattening is when you have applied the final coat you then wet'n'dry it to a dull finish(this gets it ALL level). You then cut it with a finishing compound like T Cut. Finally you polish and buff to get the shine back.

Ah OK so this process is to basically remove any imperfections in the paint?

I have a question about metalic paint if anyone can help me.

Basicly I am thinking about buying a base coat kit & buying the pearl paint seperately because it works out a fare amout cheaper than the acctual pearl kit;

5lt of black base coat
5lt 2k Clear Lacquer
2.5lt 2k hardener

£90 for the kit
£50 for 2lt Pearl Paint
£140 total. £70 cheaper than buying the pearl kit.

Now my only worry is, would i need metallic or non metallic for my base coat? & apart from primer, is there anything this kit is missing that i am going to need?
Will I need regular or 2k primer?

Just for my own records (thanks rob#155 - trying to keep everything in 1 forum so i can keep coming back and read over bits and bobs again - find it easier keeping all info in one place, thanks for the reply!)

'I gave the car 2 coats of paint then flatted it off, then 1 more coat then flatted with 1200 wet and dry nice and wet, then the final coat and colour sanded (2000 wet and dry) then used cutting compound, then a colour restorer (T cut) and buffed it up, once that's done a good wax polish '

material;

2.5 liters of paint
2.5 liters of thinner

process;

1 coat of paint
-next day
1 coat of paint
-next day
flatten
1 coat of paint
-next day
flatten with wet/dry sand @ 1200 grit
1 coat of paint
-next day
flatten with wet/dry sand @ 2000 grit

A Friday evening bump

How long should i leave between each coat.

Im guessing if I am sanding on a wet grit (flattening) I should leave it over night?

If I am just putting another coat over it, 30-40 mins?

In between coats I just let it get touch dry, however I left it overnight before flatting in between coats, Mine was trial and error, checking in a less obvious place prior to doing the whole car, just remember you have plenty of paint so if it goes slightly wrong it's no big deal!

lol appreciate the thoughts but i would want to do it all myself. How else am I going to learn. If I do a bad job. I will just have to do it again... and again... and again until i get it right. Money is money & I know that even if it takes me 6 months to get it to how i want it, - I will have the mini i want

Have so say I'm very glad this topic appeared, I'm in need of a respray but am not gonna do it as well currently I am without garage and after taking 2 weeks longer than I wanted to do an engine and respray inside the bay swap because of a lack of quality british weather, I'm considering a local garage Called Ben's Body Works.

Now I know he is a pro, excellent craftsmen in his work, but where is the best palce to get 2k paint? Its going to be a full exterior respray on my new(er) mini which has a complete zeemax kit. As I said it would only be an exterior respray, so how much paint, and what prices for just the paint should I be looking for/at?

I went to the "mini mart" a place that actually sells done up minis to ask for some advice about spraying... The guy there said he doesn't spray them him self, he sends them off to another garage, who charge him £1500 a car.

I'm buying my paint through Jawel. They sell on Fleabay but speak to Steve in their technical sales dept. He's VERY knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The number is 0121 5586191. That's their Birmingham office but I'm sure they have a branch closer to you. Hope this helps.

Hi Rob.
Before painting I'm going through a LONG (another way of saying slow) engine rebuild. Once all the mechs are done and the lump is back in I'll do the bodywork and spray. To be fair I'm actually looking forward to doing it. There are a lot of minor "imperfections" in the bodywork that I need to sort and I'm not kidding myself that it will be concourse when done but I want to achieve good results. Guess it's going to be a LONG (there that word again!) process!

Dave,
take your time with the whole project mate, when it's done and it's all your own work you'll be well pleased you did it all yourself, mine's not perfect/ concourse, but the positive comments i get off people about it is great, at the end of the day i use my mini almost every day so it'd never be a concourse car.

Hi Rob.
Will do mate. Had a local "hero" come over last night to help get the pot joints out. The guy's a Mini addict!! He currently has 6 of them!!! Got the pots out with a lot of hammer waving. He said he'd never known them to be that hard before. Typical of me to have the only car on the planet with what seemed like welded pots!! Anyway, they're out and new seals etc are on order. Once it's all rebuilt and running the cosmetics can start. I will post pics as and when.

I finally got my new phone so ill be posting some new pics up - the cars been keyed down. I think im going to replace the rear subframe before i spray the car. The lad i bought the car of thinks the best idea to fix the welding ext would be to drop the engine (will need to do this for spraying anyway) placing down lots of dovets and rolling the car... lol this to me seems very very stupid and im not keen on the idea at all. any advice or tips to making the floor welding easier... I suggested welding the car from the inside lol - would make more sense to me.
