Hi Guys

We have fitted twin SU's to a friends 1275 auto Mini.

We are having problems with the tick over speed, it is racing.

I believe it is to do with the kickdown bar, can this be shortened?

Many thanks

David

Try it without the kick down rod connected, get it running correctly, and then re-attach, you will then be able to determine the correct position of the kickdown lever and hence rod ( can't remember of the top of my head, but is there not an adjustment at the bottom ? )

The rod is only there to indicate to the gearbox the throttle position and therefore whether or not it needs to kick down a gear.

Not all Governor rods have adjustment, some of the later ones are fixed, however the majority do have adjustment.

The adjustable joint will be found at the bottom of the rod were it joins the rest of the linkage.

To set it correctly you will need a 1/4" diameter bar about 2" long is good enough.

Disconnect the linkage and get your engine running correctly, once warm and the idle is set, then attempt to re-fit the governor rod, it should be an easy fit to the carburretor with the holes lining up without any "manipulation" ie you shouldn't need to move anything, if you do then it needs to be adjusted to enable an easy sliding fit of the pin >_<

Hi Guys

Thanks for the quick replies.

The kickdown rod is too long and holding the throttle open.

MRA, its a brain dead morning!! what should we be doing with the length of bar??

David

Hi David,

The bar "locks" the lower mechanism to the gearcase .... to allow you to get the kickdown adjusted correctly........

The "rocker" assembly that the governor rod fits to has a 1/4" hole that at a certain position can "lock" with te gearcase ...... you then warm up your engine and set the revs correctly........ then adjust the rod to enable a sliding fit of the pin into the throttle linkage

Thanks for the great replies.

Ok now a question at a tangent!!

What happens if you cannot get the adjustment correct with the angle at the carbs for the gearbox to change gear properly, as in the bar holds the carbs open??

Thanks for the help so far.

You will have to put a 'sett' in the kickdown rod - basically a pair of shallow bends in opposite directions. I have twins on my auto, fortunately spotting this before running the engine :withstupid:

I also had to shorten the rod by approxiamately 1/4" (6mm to you modernistas) but CHECK an CHECK again before chopping it about - the rod should fit easily!

Thanks KalKat,

I had thought about bending the rod, but then I thought, if I bend the rod I am effectively shortening the the rod again!! un-doing the adjustment I have just made??

It depends on which engine you have and which inlet manifold you have and the combinatione of those parts......

ie. 998 is shorter than a 1275 and twins I recall are lower than a single...........

Get the bar correct and then adjust it.... :D
