The dedicated winter tyres i have bought recently; are made of a much softer rubber than standard road tyres, the tread is also much deeper, and has sort of thinner grooves/fins within each tread! To be honest i cant really fault them for grip and ride comfort (normall run on 13 X7 wheels, not sure the tyre width but its a 50 profile).
The fact that the rubber is so soft , also means ( i assume) they wont last as long!
Brian Im not sure whether to reccomend them or not. Im also scottish but living here in Sweden, I think if it wasnt the law if drops below 0c you must have winter tyres on or its a 35 quid fine per wheel. Im not sure id bother with them. I live in the south and the weather isnt as extreme as it is up north.

as it gets cold the tires get harder. so winter tires have to be a lot softer in order to still grip the road. but they do indeed wear quicker in the warm/dry. so don't run them in those conditions. when there is snow on the ground the winters make an unbelievable difference! i would give an arm and a leg to get a set of ten inch winters eh!

Hi zero111
to my knowledge and after an exhausting search online of Sweden, Norway and Germany the only suitible tyres are the 12" 145/70 size! much to my dissapointment! I would have happily taken 13" in a low enough profile to fit! if they existed. I think 10"s are also an extinct beast!
