Minis run a timing chain, not cam belts.
They are bomb proof.
This is the classic mini we are talking about?
Paul.

They do strech over time and throw the timing out, which if it was running poorly would be a sign.yarp it is an original dont the chains wear out after a while? or get streched?
How long they last depends on how the car is driven and maintained.
Changing one in car is a pig of a job, you would have to remove the radiator and the crank damper at least to do it, and then re time the cam shaft.

Compared to changing a cambelt on most modern 'euroboxes' a timing chain on a Mini is a 'walk in the park'.

But - I have heard of the chain breaking - so if it's REALLY rattling - I suggest you investigate/renew it before it all goes horribly wrong!

If you do renew it, fit a duplex gearset. Thats a twinrow chain and gearset, so resists stretch and wear better.
