Hi all, I'm checking out a '69 mini(Canadian model) with a supposed 1275 cooper S block with austin america head on it. No serial tag on the block. So is there any other way of verifying it's an S block? The present seller claims that since it has tappet covers on the side of the block facing the firewall that it's indeed a cooper S block.

True or false?

thanks!

Ron

A 1275 Cooper S does have tappet covers on the back, a standard 1275 doesn't.

But, I think all small bore engines also have tappet covers, so you'll need to make sure it is a 1275. I'm not sure if you can do that by looking at the outside... surest way would be to take off the head and measure the bore.

11 studs are easily retro fitted...

Save & secure way:
Look after the block's cast number.
It's below the driver's side (RHD) tapped cover.
Hard to look up if engine's in the car though...

1275 'S' will be AEG312/AEG631 or AEG312.
So basicly will have a AEG number instead of a 12G...

Look along the top face of the block. 1275 S blocks have a casting line along the line of the gasket 1/8" below the face. It comes from the spacer fitted to the casting pattern to extend the block for the longer stroke of a 1275. 1098 blocks which are windowed, do not have the mark.

There are also 2 round bosses cast into the back of the oil feed in the block to allow the fitting of a dry sump system.

Thanks everyone, here is a link to a photo album of the car, can anyone tell anything by the picture of the engine in the album as to what it is? I'll see if I can get the owner to find the number on the block.
