The point I was trying to make is that modern cars don't all have the brake lights working without the ignition on!

They do have to be built to the same (and more) regulations that the IVA checks for compliance though.

http://www.legislati.../1989/1796/made it'll be in there somewhere

A phrase that crops up on practically everything in the IVA manual is this:

In the case of unmodified Mass Produced vehicles the standards in
this section shall be considered to be met.

I do wonder why they make the brake lights permanently live on a modern car, I cannot foresee a situation where you would be slowing down on the road without the keys in the ignition unless you turn the ignition off and throw the key out the window whilst going along!

I had a quick snoop & couldn't find anything, I suppose there's an argument that they are less likely to fail if they are less dependent on other stuff.

The ignition switch can fail , killing the ignition circuit - and all it powers

happened on some older vauxhalls / opels

car is still rolling , but anyone behind doesn't know you are braking / trying to pull over

I'm always worried about some one not seeing my signals / brake lights

also we are told to turn off ignition when waiting in a long queue - handy to let anyone behind you the traffic has stopped

Yeah thats what I ended up using after the test as I liked it and it was a good size to stop it feeling quite so twitchy. Shame the car was inherently **** design and nearly killed me.
