Hi all,

I've found a scrapped mini in need of TLC in a local scrapyard and was wondering if i could put it back on the road as obviously the V5 will have been changed to scrap.

All help welcomed

Cheers
Adam

Dont think you can if its been declared scrap on the logbook. I suppose it would depend how long ago it was declared scrapped and if the DVLA will budge on there system?

I mean like if they only sent the paperwork saying it had been scrapped last week and you ring up saying that its a full car and your buying it to restore, you might be able to talk them round?

But if its been scrapped like a month or more, then I doubt the DVLA will issue the logbook again.

im pretty sure once a car has been scrapped then there is no lawful way it can be put back on the road.

Cheers guys i duno when it was scrapped but i know it wasnt in the scrapyard a month ago. Its in a bit of a state with some parts already gone like the front end and lights etc but the engine and most of the shell is there. Its still fairly solid aswell. Just a shame to see it go for waste

A car should only be declared scrapped once it is physically broken up - if someone has disposed of the car to a scrapyard they should give the V5C to the scrapyard not send it off themselves to the DVLA.

Shouldn't be a problem to get a V5C although if it has ben declared scrapped you may need a VIC when you put it back on the road.

Hi There, once a car has been issued a destruction order from the DVLA you can never place this back on the road.

I wouldn't have thought all scrappers get a destruction order, only insurance write offs? Surely the first the DVLA would know is when the V5 is returned as scrapped otherwise?

Check its status with the DVLA.

Have you actually checked with the scrap yard as to whether they have filled out any V5 paper work actually saying it is scrap? If they haven't filled it out & sent it to the DVLA then technically it isn't scrapped, meaning you could just buy it with the V5 & restore it. Keep us posted about how you get on.

the best thing you could do is buy the whole car and strip it for parts. it's obvoiusly been scrapped for a reason, and that reason is probably that it's rotten.

Got my mini from a scrap/breakers yard, checked with the DVLA and it needs a VIC and if that goes ok then a log book will be issued. If you know the number plate check it here DVLA Check and it should say under vehicle type approval what needs to be done.

Good luck

Not always the case mate, some people scrap a car because they dont know the true value of them and to be honest cant be arse with all the hassle of putting it up for sale. So if it was some old fella/women who wanted it gone, easiest way to get rid is just to ring the local scrappers isnt it.

Good luck gettin git though mate, will be nice to see another mini saved from the fragger
