Hi guys
Ive an 86 mayfair
I took out my 3 clock dash to check the voltage stabilizer for the fuel and temp guage and now the Rev counter clock wont work at all..........
I have checked and double checked the 2 wires are connected to it as before, no fuse blown or anything and it was working before......... Everything else is working fine but not the rev counter...........

Any idea where i can get a new Voltage stabiliser too and how much expect to pay???????

Thanks in advance

Voltage Stabilizer £37.35!! Best to get one from a breakers or some nice soul on here, a possibility is Mars Red Mike as he seems to have a mini minispares at home.

As for the rev counter, are you sure the fuse hasn't gone? I think the heater blower runs off the same one, try switching that on just to check the fuse :(

Wiki Voltage Stabilizer, iirc it gives the dash a stable 10v so the dials don't 'twitch' from the unstable voltage the car supplies. Usually shown as a failure if your fuel/temp gauges over read by 40%ish or move up and down irregularly. Think

Its a small silver box (about the size of a square of a Yorkie bar) plugs into the rear of the 3 clock set up, Pull it out it should have 3 pins on it marked I E B(i think).... It just stabilies voltage to the clocks at approx 10v. Cross E and I with a voltmeter and u should have 10v constant, Cross E and B and u should have 12v constant (or maybe vice versa) if ur gettin battery voltage 12v across both its knackered!!

Going by the description on the Mini Spares site: -

Voltage stabiliser for clubman/2-3 clock side pod(smiths) up to 1988. Three terminals/br1303/20

Up to 1988 means that post 1988 there is no replaceable voltage stabiliser as the nasty imported Nippon Seiki gauges don't have one. The older Smiths Instruments clocks did though.

So you're either going to have to send off your gauges to be fixed (by a company like 'Speedy Cables' if their able?), or replace the gauges that are bust. My temperature gauge hasn't worked in over 8 years after my dying coil fried it.

I've tried shorting out the spade terminal, but the gauge doesn't move.

Likewise you can short the 2 spade terminals on the fuel tank sender with a paper clip, then with the ignition on the fuel gauge should read full. At least that's one way of testing the circuit.

Your 2 dials must be either Smiths Instruments or a very early Nippon Seiki?

Your 3 dials is probably a Nippon Seiki job and that's why it's not present.

Apparently the regulating is done within the gauges themselves on the Nippon models?

Yes, taffy is correct.
Have you got a multimeter? - If so, please check you are getting an ignition live on the Light green with orange wire feeding hte rear of the tachometer, then, if not; try 3rd fuse down on the fuse box - you can see the light green with orange wire connected on the photo below.

If this is ok, try removing and cleaning all terminals on the coil.

HTH
Ryan.

The other gauge/electrical problem that rears it's ugly head ever so often is caused by the wiper motor park-switch. So if your wipers ever stop parking by themselves, then change it asap as it will cause gauges to misread or the main fuse to constantly blow (it runs on the same circuit as the gauges).

I won't say any more unless your main fuse keeps blowing, but if it does search the threads for wiper motor park-switch. Or post another reply.

Just read your post; do the wipers and washers work? - if not, the rev counter, heater blower and wipers all work from the 3rd fuse down...
If the fuse is good, look at the light green with orange connection to the fuse box, if this is good, disconnect the battery, unscrew the whole fuse box from the bulkhead and check for green build up on the rear. If so, buy new fuse box.
Ryan.
