I'm about to renew my spark plugs to see if it helps clear up some running issues I've been having, but while I'm thinking about it how long would you expect a set of plugs to last?

I have previously assumed that a set of plugs on a car in good working order should be happy for 12k ish, mine have done about 7k. What sort of range can I expect before I start thinking that something else is having and adverse affect on the plugs?

edit: only just realised that I never said that I was using NGK BPR6ES plugs :) better late than never :)

I don't think mine have started dying particularly early, just curious and for future reference.

NGKs wont last as lond as champion plugs do and 7k miles is really the end of their life.
They're advertised to do more than 20k miles, thats unbelievable.

No one has actually stated the NGK part number to get a champion equivalent, but for a 1275, apparently the NGK BPR6ES is good, as for Champion equivalent - i use RN9YCC.

I've been using NGK spark plugs for years and I've never had any problems with them.

But I do try to replace them every 12,000 miles.

The decision as to when to replace spark plugs is sort of an individual decision based upon how well the engine runs(how much misfire, hard starting, etc.)
As such, the quality of the ignition system(worn points vs. electronic ignition) has some effect on how long the plugs remain usable.
Also, obviously, the condition of the engine(oil consumption) also has an effect. Unless the ignition can produce a spark that "burns through" spark plug deposits caused by an oil burner,
plugs won't last as long. On the other hand, a good, tight engine which doesn't burn oil, doesn't form much in the way of spark plug deposits and has a good hot
spark that burns through deposits will last longer before misfire and hard starting occurs.

So, it's not just the initial quality of the plugs which determines how long they stay useful.

They're not expensive as consumables go really, so I'd make 12K/12 months a very much top end limit.
If you look to change HT leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap and plugs once a year (mileage notwithstanding) then what's that? £20-40 depending on what parts you choose...

Have a look at these beauties taken from an SPI mini with 66K on the clock. They are the originals....
Needless to say, my friend is much happier with her mini now.

If the mini is running a bit roughly (blowing exhaust, a bit rich/lean etc) then it is VERY easy to furr up the plugs. I can get NGKs cheaply, so replace them every 2k miles or so, along with a full oil change etc. Even after such a short length of time, I can definately feel the difference with the new lugs, the car picks up much better and idles better.

Well I've had 2 years (so far) out of my current set of NGK BPR6ES and I've got no problems.

Unless they start rusting, their staying there until they've done 12,000 miles. I've never had to change any electrical items annually (okay I'm lucky to have electronic ignition on my 1990 Mini Cooper) and as long as I've not pushed anything past 12,000 miles, then I've had no problems.

Oh and my Mini Cooper has gone past 99,610 miles in the 16 years I've owned it and is still as reliable as ever. Now if it didn't rust it would be perfect Mr Issigonis.

:(
