hallo, i have just bought my mini which was a non runner due to a driveshaft issue. Anyway i have just removed the hub to replace the bearings and there is no where to put a split pin, no wonder the hub nut came off !!! is this correct?
ps its a 1991 cooper.
thanks.

It's certainly not correct, sometimes a well fitting split pin can be broken off making it look as if there's no hole at all, however, I think there's normally 2 holes, so it could well be a manufacturing oversight. I have seen this once before & managed to carefully drill my own split pin hole.

Only metro CV's had the two holes, Mini's only had the one hole

What is the difference between a metro and a mini cv joint, I thought they were interchangable?

I'm sure one of my Haynes manuals (an early one printed pre-Metro) gives torque settings for both types of CV?

As an aside - Dan and I have chatted before about how the number of holes makes any difference to the torque required too - surely it is the bearing type that dictates the torque? So given how many parts have now got swapped about on Minis I have reservations on how accurate it is to use the number of CV holes as an indicator of the turque required by the type of bearing fitted.

It sounds like Chinese rubbish. Buy a new one from a motor factors or reputable mini shop. You life is too valuable. Some of the imports are so bad its impossible to knock them off the splines once you have put them on; in others the cages dont work properly and seize.

Yes they are interchangeable in essence..... however when the Metro came out the CV joint had two holes this was to enable fitment of the split pin once the torque wrench setting has been reached... Look at the Metro and Mini haynes or Rover manual it gives (or used to ) two different methods and torque wrench settings

I have usde both types in the past and had no noticeable difference with fitting etc....

I know this may seem really simple but are you sure the hole is not being covered up by the castle nut?
