I have an idler gear with a shaft diameter of .750" and shaft length is 24mm (ish) on both sides. I was told it was A series (hence the .750" diameter), but apparently an A-series idler gear should have one shaft longer than the other. Is that right? What's going on?!

I thought the idler gear was reversible ie. you can put itin either way as its identical both sides. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Yeah, I thought that too, but I keep coming across posts that describe it as one side longer than the other, and to put the longer side in the gearbox and short side in the flywheel housing. Just confused really, and I don't want to put the wrong gear in if it'll do damage.

Early Idler gears ar 19mm dia shaft (A series) longer side goes in the gearbox...

A+ are 22.3 dia shaft and have equal length shafts either side of the gear

I think very early A series idlers did not have the longer shaft - both were equal length. I seem to remember the longer shaft coming in as an 'improvement'!

If your idler gear shaft is .750" diameter, it is A series, as .750" is 19mm. Early A series idler gears had the same length shaft both sides, until (I think) about 1966.
