Can I use etch primer on my alloys then top coat or will just normal primer work. Which is better? Will the paint lift with etch primer?

Yes, etch works just the same on aluminium as it does steel. Always use etch primer on all bare metal, then prime and topcoat.

Do I need to prime over etch primer? What happens if I just top coat over 2 coats of etch primer?

Etch primer should only be dusted on, never apply it wet like normal primer, if you do that it won't work. One light coat is all that's needed, then ideally you should prime over it.

DOH!! I've already coated the front of one wheel (to see how it would look) and it sounds like I've used too much. Oh well back to sanding :D With a light coat should I still be able to see metal through the paint? Would you happen to have any pics of how it should be etch primed first?

Thanks for the advice panelbeaterpeter.

Yes you want a dusty coat, so you can still see the metal through it. If you apply it thickly, you can usually scrape it off after, with your fingernail, which kind of defeats the object.
