unleaded head / su carb 1" 1/2" with k&n filter

gents im having trouble getting my mini to run properly since fitting a new unleaded head, was previously using the leaded head

cannot get the timing to be right as when we try to set it it changes, we pull out the advance and retard pipe to set the timing but were still having trouble to set it

were thinking this may be more to do with the distributor which is a 59D4 lucas engine code 99HA53

we are unsure of what distributor should be used on this engine?

do we need to change the timing as were now using the unleaded head?

im thinking maybe the centrifugal advance and retard may have gone and this is causing the trouble

would like to try another distributor but unsure of which one to go for? 45D4 has a diffrent clamp on the base to a 59D4

any help greatly appreceated

You need to stick with similar mount dizzy. Twist the rotor - if it springs back the mechanical adavnce is working. Suck the vacuum pipe - and watch the dizzy base plate. If it moves - all is well. Why are you fitting an 'unleaded' head ? :D

fitting an unleaded head so will not have to use the additive and cannot get any 4 star anymore

will give your suggestion a go see if it makes a diffence so its the 59D4 dizzy i should be using then just incase i need to replace mine

998 runs fine without additive - or 4 star!! The 'unleaded' head only had better quality exhaust valves - it's not necessary. Dizzy won't need 'replacing' - may need some fettling!

The era of yours will be similar to mine. A+ 998 engine with a Lucas 59D4 (41882) is stated in the Haynes workshop manual (supplement section at the back)

just seen this

http://www.playmini....butor_specs.htm

am i correct in saying that the lucas 41857 45D4 is what the new units are used on them then remanufactured ones use the 41882 59D4

there is also one for unleaded which is 41907 again a 59D4

silly question but would i need an unleaded distributor for mine??

have been offerd a new distributor for mine less than half price it is a lucas 41857 45D4 is this the right one for me?

my engine number is 99ha53po 998cc reg 1985 is this an a+ series engine then?

any help greatly appreceated

Exactly what head did you fit to this engine? - I doubt there is anything wrong with the dizzy!

No. I changed the head on my 998 to U/L and had no problems. The dizzy only supplies a spark, they don't strictly come in leaded and unleaded forms.

If the spark was fine before, it should still be now, how is the timing changing when you set it? Have you checked you've got the correct points gap of 0.012"?

If you set the timing with the vacuum advance unplugged then it should stay the same afterwards.

When does it change though?
ie is the process of events exactly as....
- warm car up to run with no choke
- disconnect the vacuum from the dizzy and plug the pipe
- set the timing
- reconnect vacuum and go for a run
- come back, disconnect vacuum, plug pipe and test timing again

Is this where the timing has changed?

Could well be the dizzy bushes are worn, quite a common problem. Set the points note which lobe you've set them on, stick it in gear push the mini and check the points on a differant lobe, if it's differant the bushes are worn.
