I see - yes making the windscreen lip up from scratch would be a pain! If the repairs don't have enough metal in them, I have the scuttle I cut off mine still in the garage which was carefully removed by drilling out the spot welds which you could have if you can pick it up,
JR
Thanks for the offer JR but you are a bit far away to go just for a windscreen lip,if we were closer would of probably taken up your offer though

After we got the engine out we were presented with the above masterpiece on the bulkhead, the thinnest piece of steel, 2 pop rivets and some sealant. Further along is more rust covered with Waxoyl and filler.
The previous owner has really excelled himself this time.

Engine ready to lift out and Dad sneaking in a quick cuppa
We borrowed the engine from a friend of my Dads with an extra long jib built for his Lambo Diablo kit car
Once the engine was out we found this
and then this
More work for Dad but anyway we managed to get the subframe out and its in good condition so tomorrow Dad will power wash the engine and subframe. Strip the subframe and then send it away for powder coating. Oh and then strip the bulkhead back to bare metal to see just how much rust there really is.
Upwards and onwards.

I can't believe that an MOT inspector didn't pick up on that bulkhead crossmember!!!, that's just dangerous
Good luck with the rest of the car
Andy
Well the seller said it was last driven on the road 4 years ago but this is very hard to believe as some of the parts on it are just terrible and this car hasn't been driven for a long time and has spent the last 10 years outside more than likely. All the repair patches and bodge jobs look recent just to get it too sell i think as the quality is appalling. It may of been on the road 4 years ago but not with a decent MOT,maybe some hooky mate MOTer but not a good one.
If we had gone to see this before we bought it i wouldn't pay £1090 for it like i did.At this rate i will be catching up with you on the amount of panels replaced .We are even thinking about replacing the rear 1/4's now as he replaced them but not very well and just left the stickers on them too.Think the only regret we had about the boot was not replacing the outer arches as we did the inners but then the outers had been played with before by him.

The holes are right where the heater box hooks onto so before much longer there would have only been a couple of screws holding it on under the dash.
And to top it off where the r/h flitch panel had been welded in they had obviously missed the hole by the air vent and so stuck a piece of metal on with sealant to cover it
The wiring loom isn't too good either with lots of crimps, brittle cables and added extras that are to say the least rubbish so a replacement loom is on the cards as well. Damn!!!

I was thinking while reading that this was a perfect time for you to tub the arches and hoped you would but then you didn't do it, there is still time though it is relativly easy and will get rid of the messed around with wheel arches and give you a heap more clearance for big wheels and lots of loweringThink the only regret we had about the boot was not replacing the outer arches as we did the inners but then the outers had been played with before by him.

just rea t through the entire thread and poor your dad he has had an awful lot of welding to do think my dad would've given up a long time ago! lol there was an awful lot of pannels to replace!

Not really sure on tubbing the arches, big wheels are a big no no for us as the first thing that went when it came was the superlites. The mini was designed to run on 10" so that's what I have bought(ok i know there 1.5" wider than the original 4.5" mini wheels and that the mayfair came with 12" anyway).
Yeah its alot on panels but we have thought many times just to get rid of them but for what it cost me that would be a quite expensive thing to do.Anyway my dad plans on doing some other car once'd this is finished and we have moved(he hasn't decided yet but a mini may be on the cards as he is liking the bike engine conversions ) so this is like a big warm up for him

were did u get the centers from mate ?Right another update
mainly more stripping and cleaning today.
Cleaned off waxoil today on the rear subframe with some nitro mores as i planned on getting the subframes powder coated. They will be chemically cleaned and blasted but thought i would take off the waxoil
Still busy refurbing superlites ready to sell.first layer of primer
Now for the shiny bits
Got this steering rack bracket for lowering the rack, not mine but will hopefully be getting on some. Its a monster and much better than the other ones you can by,made from stainless steel and solid.
Some black mistral wheels(minilites)They have been powder coated.
And some awesome centres for them.Made from stainless steel and should last longer than plastic ones
Also can someone tell me if that dash i brought which is in one of the posts above is from retrodash,i think it is.

Anyway back to Erm, today was a case of finish stripping out the engine bay and to see just how much rust was lurking under all the hammerite.
Well it was one of those" shall i scrap it or not moments" as there was rust everywhere "Bugger" however after spending what felt like several hours (oh it was!!) with the grinder and wire brush it was not too bad and well within my capabilities to repair.
R/h corner cutout on bulkhead and cross member
New metal clamped in place
Welded up
L/h corner rust and the bodged patch covering it
There is still lots to do and more of the cross member to cutout and replace but i should finish that hopefully tomorrow although i do know that we will be getting loads of panels turning up sometime tomorrow. Oh and i'm running out of gas so a visit to Mr B.O.C may be on the cards.
