Having seen so many posts about the coating chipping we have decided to go the paint route instead. Its sounds daft but the idea of rust getting under the powder coating and everything lifting off is not where we want to be with Erm after all of the hard work that has gone into him.

Its a lesson learnt in this particular case although we will still use powder coating for other items just not the subbies.

ok but if you are keeping the red colour you can spray over them and have an additive put in the paint to make it flex ( sorry if my spelling off ) have a few cans lol

I don't believe all the romours about powder coating chipping..

my dads front subby is still looking pretty frsh after 20 years! the cones have pretty much colapsed.. but there's no rust.

the rear subby was painted, then undersealed, is 'ratty' to say the least. that's being powder coated this year.

At the moment Scott has got no money to lavish on Erm as he's an apprentice living away from home, however he's moving back in next month so once he's bought another car (if the bank gives him a loan) he will be able to save some money and spend it on Erm.

We still have not finalized what we are going to do with regards to Erms subbies, personally i think now we should leave them as is for the time being and see how we get on with them.

The paintwork is really coming on with its shine but annoyingly there is a light patch appearing on the l/h rear quarter, in fact more like a circle. I have not colour sanded in that area as well so its thin paint. DAMN!!! Once he's on the road we will get the quarter repainted along with the bonnet. Its too bloody far to take him back to the paintshop where he was sprayed.

Good news that we might see a bit more progress on Erm soon. Looking forward to it! Can't believe the trouble you have had with paint. Still - its no good settling for anything less than perfect now. :)

Tis true Rich, i'm just annoyed that £3k of paint is not good enough and that is what really pees me off. I'm going to paint Paddy myself so at least that way if there is any blame to be apportioned it will be on myself, oh and it won't cost £3k either. Still a lesson learned and also sometimes a friends recommendation is not always good enough.

That's good then Dan, it really is down to the amount of effort you put into preparation.

It is as I have learnt, I have took lots of advice from Peter (panelbeaterpeter) and he's a great chap and very clever and he's taught me it all! I've barcoated any existing paint before primer or bare metalled so there's no reactions and all the rust is gone so my paint will last year's! Hope paddy goes smoothly too.

I like your thinking. The massive outlay for a professional paint job has always scared me a bit, and I cant imagine I will have that kind of cash available when the time comes. I find it really encouraging when people on here get good results doing it themselves (albeit with plenty of elbow grease!)
