Project Erm

I have mentioned on numerous occasions that when i had been prepping joints for welding i had used primer and top coat then welded and followed by touching up with topcoat again. In a lot of places normally hidden out of sight this has not been a problem but on my door skins and some other joints there has been a massive paint reaction when the car has been sprayed in the paint booth.
This in turn has caused a lot of remedial work and a hefty increase in our paint bill which is not good at all. This my fault and i fully accept this so if anybody has suffered the same problem after following my info then all i can do is apologise.
Its been a kick in the teeth especially to Scott as he is funding the respray, i will not divulge how much its going to cost but it is considerably more than we bargained for so a lesson learned. The zinc rich primer is not the issue here but the top coat paint i bought from Halfords.
The painters are going to try a sealer to see if the reaction can be prevented on other parts of the shell but i will be going in tomorrow to strip those potential areas as a cost saving exercise.
On a positive note the doors bonnet and boot have come up really well so very pleased with the finish. Hopefully the shell will look the same but time will tell.

I will see if i can take a couple of pictures at the body shop tomorrow but no promises. Shifty had a reaction on one of his cars, its something similar but not quite as drastic. Its called pickling.

That is such a shame after the huge effort you put in. I feel so sorry for you. What is so admirable about you is that you confess to a supposed mistake but you had done your utmost to do it right and help all of us at the same time. You also don't let it stop you but deal with the fault and get on. I am the other way. And you were right Neil my windscreen didn't fit. I had a wee play with it on Tuesday night but was so disheartened I have left it since!
I'm certain that you will sort your paint problem - if anyone can it's you. Then as time passes the horrible and disappointing memories will fade!
All the best Neil

It could be worse, i had to run a very small shift on sunday and jack a B747 twice to remedy a damaged under carriage door. We managed after much messing around and all was sorted, however the damn thing reappeared back at the hangar yesterday with the door damaged again and nobody can find the reason why. Sort of makes the Mini problem look very minor. Such is life.

That really sucks. We have all followed this project with great awe and learned from each step you took. Now we will learn from this setback to be sure. I am now going to check with my paint suppliers to be certain that all the primers and undercoats I am using are compatible with the paint.
Having had a chat with the body shop guys it would appear that the two pack synthetic paint they are using does not like the acrylic paint we get from Halfrauds. Its only small amounts of painted areas but enough to cause the grief. They did tell me what the paint was called but for the life of me i cannot remember what it is, all i know is its a German paint.
I will remember this for the next project. They say you learn from your mistakes and i have to agree.

Shame you've had such a set back but at least we can all learn from this as well as your successes. I did a quick tart up job with acylic cans the other day on a mini roof & really struggled to get a half decent finish. Hope you get it sorted easily.

The doors, bonnet and boot have been painted and have come up really well although they will need another coat of paint to remove a few defects
In the meanwhile Scott has been busy building up the front subframe and has nearly finished it although things will need to be adjusted removed etc but it looks really good.
And the tops of the towers nice and smooth
And the towing eye
Still a bit of work to do on it but for a first time attempt i feel the boy has done good so at least things are looking up.

WOW, looking spectacular !! Paint problems aside, the finish is looking great and love the built up subby. Despite problems I am still referencing your build for guidance !!
Graham
Cheers for that Graham votes of confidence like that are appreciated. I feel its always best to admit if you have made a bit of a mess up with info so at least those mistakes won't be duplicated by other forum members.

Subframe looks the nuts, is that waxoyl thats been applied into the corners?

Yes its Waxoyl, trying to keep the dreaded grot away. We will be applying a little heat to make it flow for a smoother finish but not too much heat.
