How do you cut such delicate small holes like in that last repair?

Ha this could be a trade secret??? errr no i used one of these
Posted Image

right angle high speed grinder with a oval shaped grinding burr. I drilled a couple of 1/4" holes one each end of the area to cut out then using this wee beastie opened the holes up until i had ground out all of the rust. We use these a lot in the Aviation industry especially for corrosion removal.

Hello there mate, project's looking good!

Just wondering if you could cast your mind back to page two, where you reskinned the doors? I've just bought a pair of doors with reskinning in mind, and was wondering what skins you used, and were they any good, panel fit wise?

Cheers, Paul.

Hi with regards to the skins, i had bought a pair from Scparts fitted one but was not happy with the bow in the top of the panel once it was fitted so we went and bought Heritage skins. So much better and the overall fit was spot on. They are more expensive but worth it for the finish.

I did use the Scparts repair panels for the bottom of the door frame but again these were ok but i had to section these to straighten them out plus add corner pieces to make them fit properly.

Fair enough, i'll avoid the scparts panels then :)

Specifically though, what do you mean by the 'bow' in the top of the panel?

I'll be using pattern skins on my doors. I know the finish won't be as good, but then at a third of the price i don't expect it to be. I simply can't afford the heritage skins, so i'll be fettling some kind of pattern ones to get a decent fit. :)

The 'bow' is at the top of the skin where the window goes through. At this point the pattern door skins we had tended to bow out meaning even with the seal fitted water would leak in.With the heritage panels we did not have the same problem although it might of just been bad luck for us and your pattern panels may be fine :)

Aah I see...

Thanks for sharing, i'll do a bit more research into different pattern panels, see where's best :)

Well me and my Dad popped up to Bingley today. So glad we had a advance ticket as the queue for the other side was huge and we were second in so not out in the cold to long :) although I am sure to start with it was just as cold inside :) .Anyway I spent some money on a few bits.Got my first bargain which was the centre binnacle although i only needed the case and not the dials.

Posted Image

Went around a few of the shops and the auto jumble to pick up some other bits. The DSN classics shop was awesome and spent quite abit on some billet parts from them :) .Bit of a sucker for shiny stuff.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Smithys bits for more shinny stuff :)

Posted Image

Even though I had a list of stuff needed for both minis most of the shops didn't have everything I wanted but can pick up the left over stuff from the internet.

Alternators(standard and high power) for both minis plus a starter motor for erm

Posted Image

A mk1 grille from Minisport and some headlights for Paddy and Erm.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Then loads for nuts, bolts and washers plus some trim and small parts

Posted Image

Overall is was quite a productive day and saw some nice minis but it was extremely busy much more than last year or so it seemed :o

WOW your wallet must be a bit lighter now, I'll check back to see how you get on with the engine steady, mine didn't fit on the thermostat studs and I had to drill the hole nearest the radiator to 9mm. Nice lot of bit's though.

Nice shopping trip. Good choice of components. I've either got or plan to get alot of the same parts. Let us know how you get on with the DSN engine steady. Keen to know if it's worth the pennies.

£35 a proper bargain as others were wanting £70+, Scott only wanted the case so if anybody is interested in a low mileage speedo (this is supposed to be the true mileage as well) then pm me or Scott (scsracing)

Will do,

Anyway back to Erm and his poor fitting Bonnet. This is really getting on my pip now it really is a poor fit so plan A was brought into action however it failed at the starting post
Posted Image
Posted Image
So with the gap like it is i thought i would slice the slam panel, move it up and then move things around, however it was a bad idea so had to weld it back up again and go to plan B.
This time i took a few measurements, offered up the new grill to see how things looked and decided to slice the bonnet edge to bring the lip down and then fill the gap with some new metal
Posted Image
Posted Image
You can see how much more metal needs to be added so i have got the filler piece rough cut so some final trimming and it will get tacked in but not until the weekend. Back on shift tomorrow so it won't get done till next weekend.

Continued with the bonnet modding today
Filler piece welded in place
Posted Image
Ground down
Posted Image
It will need a little bit of hammer and dolly work but other than that quite happy with the gap.
Then it was onto the sides, original gaps
L/h side
Posted Image
R/h side
Posted Image
This was my fault when i fitted the wings, such is life so a lesson learnt
Anyway r/h side of bonnet cut and the new filler piece getting tacked in place
Posted Image
Just the front piece to do
Posted Image

In the mean time Scott has been busy sanding down Erm's backside back to bare metal
Posted Image

So hopefully by the end of play monday evening the bonnet will be finished so happy days
