New to mini's so forgive me if this is a noobish question..

Currently got a 998cc engine, just out of impulse bought an exhaust on ebay..

But later looked to see it was a large bore? (RC40 exhaust)

My friend who has had a mini a fair while thinks this could be a problem? he think the large bore exhaust where used on the 1275cc engines?

Is he right/wrong and can the exhaust fit my car? either with reducers or whatever?

thanks

large bore will = loss of power.

best bet will be a small bore rc40 or cooper mainflow for best power results if tied in with a new inlet manifold

edit: how large is large bore..2.25/2.5?

Its only 1.75" which seemed rather 'small' to me?

as my current car's (Peugeot 106) exhaust bore is 2.5"

1.75" is about right for a 998, anything more then you will lose power with a 998 engine, the bigger exhausts are better for the 1275

1.75 is just about optimal for a 998 - anything larger may start to cause problems but 1.75 is fine.

More importantly which manifold are you going to run? If you're thinking of getting an LCB - don't. Get a cooper freeflow manifold that is designed for Small bore motors rather than an LCB that isn't.

I have a 1 7/8" stainless RC40 with a single silencer (similar to this) and an alloy inlet and it that came from another 998 which I want to put on my new 998. It will also have a K&N filter in the factory housing.
Is a 1 7/8" classed as big bore and will this set up be OK for my 998?

No, it's perfect for a small bore.

RC40's aren't made in 1 7/8" you might be measuring the flange...

On a somewhat related note, the previous owner of my Mini put a large DTM exhaust on, but left on the standard cast iron manifold. Basically, looking at the exhaust, they have the stock manifold and the stock downpipe, but have sawn off the exhaust pipe after the first silencer box and fitted a larger pipe around it, and an even larger muffler onto the end of that pipe. I've suspected this has been causing lost performance (and it is definitely too loud), but I haven't figured out whether I could get away with having a muffler shop put on a smaller, quieter muffler (perhaps fitting inside the larger pipe rather than around it), or whether I'd need to order a whole new exhaust system. Any ideas?

get yourself a stage 1 kit..or stage1 inlet manifold and either cooper mainflow exhaust system or rc40 classic twin box.

if yours is a 998 that is

in that case get a new inlet manifold..i think the minispares ones are meant to be good...minisport one on mine seems to be fine

then get new exhaust...the stage1 kit on minispares/minisport/where ever else sells them will come with all you need

No that will be fine, when it comes to a RC40 AFAIK they all have the same diameter pipe. The Large and Small bore comes into it for the tail pipe after the silencer. So that is what it refers to, the 6 or so inches after the rear box. This will not effect performance only the loudness.
