Now then.

log story short, dear DOT, TMF regular had a series of let-dows on her mini. Without too much detail she had lavished love and some considerable monies but the mini just didnt seem to making any real progress. One very unscrupulous chap led to another unreliable chap and the poor old min just wasnt getting any better.

Dot asked us to help, she was desperate, all the body rectifications had been done, all the welding was OK and it just needed the paint rectifying to get a better quality of finish, and then final fit-up of some nice bits she had bought.

or so we thought.

we decided that if we were going to do a decent job on paint, we ought to have a bit of a dig into the filler to see what was going on underneath.

guess what - it was rust. Rot and rust - and lots of it. The poor old girl was in terrible shape, most of it hidden by an extremely poor quality body kit.

anyways, we've dug out all the filler and decided best course of action is to chop out all the bad steel, and the bad repairs, and at least try to make a decent job of it all.

Dot as ever is very patient, and agrees the final result is worth the wait. Its gonna take a bit more steel than we originally thought...............

so whos mad enough to take on that amount of welding......?

Good old Shifty !!

we also found that the only part of the mini that looked reasonablly OK wasnt actually atatched !! its had new front wings during its previous works, but they arnt actually atatched properly. I've never seen this much flex in a fixed front before :D

we'll try to update as often as we can so you can see the second re-birth of the Pink panther as it comes together.

Don't worry I'm very restrained!!

Those pics that Roofless put up don't really do the rust justice!!

There's extensive rust in the roof/scuttle/companion bins etc

Also poor repairs on the inner and outer sills, accident damage on the rear 1/4's

I would guess I've got about 50hrs of welding and rectification to the shell just to get it to the stage where Roofless can start being able to prep it for paint.

Well I've been busy today!!

Got the mini up on ramps in my garage and started work on it.

First off, pulled off the wing to see what lay beneath.

Posted Image

Not too bad as it happens!!

Broke out the plasma cutter!!

Posted Image

Heh heh heh!!

Cut some access holes in the side panel to see what I was doing

Posted Image

Replaced the door step

Posted Image

Did some repairs in the companion bin

Posted Image

Made a BIG hole!!

Posted Image

And fitted the new floor

Posted Image

Posted Image

Heres the pile of rusty bits that came off!!

Posted Image

Finished for the day now, will be back at it tomorrow.

Its looking good, stuff is lining up nicely, by the time I've licked it with the grinder you won't even know its there.

Just need to refit the end of the crossmember(after i've fixed the rust in it!!) and thats this side done.

The structural repairs need to be done first, then its the scuttle and front end.

Once thats done I'll do the 1/4's

Then its the boot floor and the roof, still debating the best way to do it.

I plan on getting at least most of the structural work done this weekend.
