As you may be aware, due to previous posts, i am prepping my mini for respray. Anyway, Can anyone please tell me what spary gun i should buy for really good results. My budget will be around the £200 mark.

However, I already have this one from Machine Mart, but i dont know how good it is compared to the more expensive ones.

Hi John,
Obviously different painters will recommend different guns, Iwata, de vilbiss etc etc, but if you are only intending to spray a car once & not do it regulary then you can get some really good results using a cheaper gun like the clark one. I used one of these for years with no problems.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I am however aiming for the best gun which will mean the paint goes on with mijnimal flatting required. I will be spraying celly, and hope for a finish close to, if not concours. Have you acheived such results using a cheaper gun? Also, what nozzle sizes are required for celly? The current gun I have is fitted with a 1.4mm nozzle, and my compressor is 3HP, 12cfpm.

Cheers

i used the clasrke one for year with a 1.4 nozzle like frog stated had no problems thought it was fantastic then i went out and spent £140 on a cheap iwata with a 1.3 nozzle... wow.... out the gun finish is amazing its not just about the gun though.. air pressure, fan of the gun and last but not least your abilty..
my optimum setup is my 1.3 nozzled gun running 3 bar of air pressure and set the fan up so you get a nice even coat but not too wide so you get shed loads of over spray. oooh and wind the needle all the way out till you can use all the needle in the gun then turn it in 3/4 of a turn. makes a hell of a difference

Hi John,
I agree with Mini mad daps, I too have changed to a 1.3 nozzle, the gun I mainly use for topcoat is an HTE (high transfer efficiency gun cost about £90) you have to get is set up correctly though, I generally spray at approx 50 p.s.i.
It is well worth getting an old panel to do a few testers on before you start so that you get the flow etc that is right for you. There is no hard & fast way of setting a spray gun up, different people set them up slightly differently. Obviously a
good spray job is all in the prep work so make sure that this is good. A certain amount of flatting & polishing will have to be done especially if you are going concours, Remember celly takes a while to go off fully, it may be touch dry in an hour or so but I wouldn't recommend any flattening or polishing for about a week after it is sprayed as it will still be soft.

Thanks for that. I have done most of the prep work, but certainly wont rush that stage. Even though I know i have done it correctly, are there any links on here or the internet which serve as good guides for prep work?

Also, would you recommend a HVLP gun?

Hi
yes, i am aiming for concours finish with celly. How easy is celly to spray? I am looking to buy the Divilbiss GTI pro air gun, but it socts over £200. I dont know if i might be wasting money, as I dont know how much use it will get after i finish painting this mini.

I use a Sata HVLP 1.3 for clears, another Sata HVLP 1.3 for solvent basecoat and a Gti-w 1.3 for waterbase basecoat (although it will do solvent too, it just has stainless internals apparently)

Ive heard good things about the Devilbiss Gti Pro. I think PBP said he uses one for topcoat and you've probably seen the jobs he turns out! I dont remember if he said he uses a 1.3 or 1.4 setup though.

Id bite the bullet and spend that little more on something like the Devilbiss Pro and with a little practice and patience you will get the result you want.

All our guns are from spraygunsdirect.co.uk who are in Derby, they're really helpful and will let you get them out and have a feel of them.

Good luck, I cant wait to see when your done!

Hi john,
Spraying celly is quite simple, apply relatively thin coats (you can't put it on as thick as 2k) & build them up, normally I would look to do 2-3 coats of 50/50 mix then last coat thin to between 40/60 or 30/70 obvoiusly this is thinner so apply carefully & try not to get any runs. Most spray jobs are ruined by people rushing them.

Hi
I have bit the bullet and have ordered my spray gun from spraygunsdirect. I have gone for the DeVilbiss GTI pro, with T1 cap and 1.3 fluid needle. I hope this gun will give me a good finish, if i follow the advice given about building up the coats gradually. I am in the process of prepping prior to adding barcoat, and celly primer filler.

This might sound like a silly question, but what is the definition of prepping? Does it mean it includes the filler stage, or just prepping surface quality, degreasing etc before paint application? I hear a lot about 90% of the final finish is in the prep.

Prep is the whole process upto the point you pull the trigger on the gun.

Good choice with the Devilbiss, make sure you get a little practice first.

Why barcoat? Personally I think if you need to use that your covering a problem that may re appear later on.. if your prep is good you shouldn't need it.

Hi John,
Prepping is pretty much everything you do right up to the point of putting paint on, even priming & flattening ready for top coat can be classed as prep work if you wnated to. Why are you using barcoat ?? Providing all the prep work is good you should be able to prime, flatten & paint.
