This is exactly what I've been experiencing too with my Mpi (hence the stupid other post I just put up without looking at this one!)

I can only get 18 litres in the tank when it's showing empty. So at least I now know I can go a fair bit after then before running it. And maybe it's worth trying a new sender. or at least check the one that's in there.

Dragging this up from the depths...

I was reading the Rover handbook that came with my 94 SPi (just because its cool. ha) and printed under the "Tank Capacity" section it states Carb models: 34 liters - 7.5 gal. Fuel injected models: 31.4 liters - 7 gal. Everywhere I have read, everyone states the injection models to have a 7.5 tank. Was this a misprint??

Edit: this handbook also states to run 10w/30...so maybe I should read into all that closely:-)

Nice thread revival!

Thought I'd take the opportunity to show you the guts of a (broken) sender, to allow an appreciation of how they work and why they don't.

Attached photo shows the rheostat. As the float falls, the current has to travel through more of the resistive wire, lowering the output voltage and the indicated amount on the gauge.

Years of rubbing the the contact across the wires will eventually wear through the wire (arrowed), giving an indication of 'Full' and reducing in line with the contents, until the wiper reaches beyond the break in the wire, at which point the gauge plummets to 'Empty', despite the fact that there's still quite a lot of fuel in the tank.
