the rod shift has a better feel to it, but i do like the remote due to the extra stability it gives to the engine.

Imho the remote has it hands down, I prefer the gate/throw of the remote and of course the extra engine stability is just a bonus.

The use of which style of gearbox is determined by the shape of the shell's tunnel...

From a mechanical perspective, the rod change is the better design and more reliable... however the remote does have a much better feel... well it's got 4 times as many springs and detents in it for a start and 3 times more selector rods..

Of course the above is the standard answer, but in reality I've never bust a remote box. But done plenty of A+ rod boxes in.

I have no intention of changing the gearbox in my car but would think that anyone who is considering a change should also be aware of parts availability when and if a rebuild is necessary. Any comments along those lines Nightrain or Guessworks?

Not had any bother with bit's as yet, just rebuilt my latest remote box for the Mk3. Converted to S ratios, with all new bearings, mind you the only ones I had to buy where the needle rollers for the layshaft. Minispares North had 'em in stock, but used my last full metal cage third motion shaft bearing NOS, plastic crap from now on :dontgetit:
