As the title says really, however the car never had door mirrors from new, can this be right?? I don't want to drill the doors really.

Has anyone experienced this??

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_810.htm

Obligatory mirrors
Obligatory mirrors are
a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the
drivers seat), or

b, an exterior mirror fitted to the
nearside fleft hand side when seated In the drivers seat), or

c. an interior mirror.

Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.

Seems like you need one, what about a clip on type that clamps to the door frame, sure I've seen something like that about. Can always take it off after the test.

Hang on just re-read that, if you've an interior mirror that covers you, it only says one of the above options for pre 1978 cars

I don't think it is right, but you can get those accessory mirrors that clamp on to the window frame, for any easy solution.

I have had vehicles pass with

1) a clip on mirror on the offside. clipped on the seam.
2) an interior rear view mirror fitted.

This was on a later type mini - 80's.

Thanks, I am pretty sure the older minis at the shows don't have them. Do people just add one to pass the test and then remove it then? I thought there might be an exemption if it was not originally fitted. oh well...

Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.

You need one mirror for your 1972 Mini.

Passenger vehicles with more than 7 passenger seats of any age, and all passenger vehicles first used on or after I August 1978 (not being a minibus as above), must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'.

On a later mini, you are required to have a drivers mirror and one of the following; interior mirror or nearside (passenger) mirror

As it says above, you need ONE mirror on a car pre 01/08/1978 - that one mirror can be your internal rear view mirror.

So if you have a mirror inside the car you do not need one outside - ask the MoT tester to show you where in his manual it says that a 1972 car must have a door mirror fitted.

Thanks, well spotted I misread it too. :(

I have asked the MOT tester prior to attending so I will clarify this before he starts so he can check himself, I guess he doesn't do many pre 78 vehicles now but I would have thought he should know!!

No door mirrors it is then.... :(

Im pretty sure he is wrong after reading the guidelines as well.

Ive had had a 79 pass no problem with just an interior and a drivers side mirror.

Cheers Rosco.

It's common for them not to know stuff about earlier cars. A little known MOT regulation is that Pre 1980 cars don't need a VIN plate displayed. My old Minor 1000 van never had one and I always had to get the tester to read the manual!
