I find with government departments, (not just DVLA, VOSA but also the Inland Revenue, ACAS etc), the clarification of wording of the law changes everytime you speak to someone different. It always pays to get clarification in writing, but a friend of mine found to his expense that even that is worth nothing when it involves the government and the law. There are a lot of grey areas and I find interpretation complex, look up pregnancy and employment, there are so many "employers may", "some employers exercise the right.... some don't" etc.

In others words, what one driver can get away with, another may not.

R1Mini, is right, as far as I know, though a few Z Cars have been through it I believe.

Read the beginning of this thread, gather any other information you need, and make your own decision about the risk.

So a de-seamed convertible mini pickup - which was a seamed std mayfair

if it goes thru a MOT - won't need a BIVA ?

original engine / gearbox

all original suspension / steering / brakes / lights / wheel track & wheel base

only the upper body modified / removed ? - no change in length width or height (window screen surround) ?

would make life easier

the MOT doesn't check for the originality of the car

as long as the chassis and reg number match what they have on the computer they carry on with the test

it could of grown another set of wheels and wings for all they care

So how does VOSA , get to know a vehicle requires a BIVA

I thought the MOT station was required to notify VOSA - if the description of the vehicle on record -

ie Saloon - didn't match the configuration of the vehicle being tested ie open top

If they don't - that's great

yes your MOT station might sus your mini moke says saloon on the log book but a mini with a turbo bulkhead box still looks like a mini

and as long as the box isn't put on with bluetac they won't care

You could be grassed up to the DVLA, stopped by the police or a VOSA roadside inspection, have your car written off and have a VIC placed on it if you opted to by it back to repair. Even then you may not end up needing a BIVA, but it's your risk so your decision to make.

Oh I do love a bit of scepticism.

All you who have posted on here have not shown any documentation what so ever to say that anything other than an MOT is required to drive a Mini on the road even after being highly modified.

I think to stop all the confusing posts that this thread has, it should be deleted. A sticky saying "modified cars must pass an MOT" in it's place will suffice. :highfive:

I've done this.

After reading various pages on the subject which all point to the same VOSA document I quoted from in earlier posts. The 10 years exemptions still apply.

You have found the same site as I read through.

My car has zero points so fails the 8 point rule.

So follow all the links (there are about 5) and read all the relevant information and it brings you to the same document from VOSA as was mentioned on my quotes earlier, stating the ten year rule.

Have you done this? If you have, you would see it for yourself.

if you car fails the 8 points system try emailing DVLA and ask what you should do next, this is just going around in circles

if would be nice if you copied your letter and the reply on this topic

i think your say 15 year old mini isn't a 15 year old mini once it's modified it becomes a new unregistered car, just like building a kit car and having it registered for the first time

your new modified mini being less than 10 years old and failing the 8 points to keep it's original registration and age now needs a iva test or a basic test a biva

now if you say but wait my mini was modified 11 years ago it will already have a sva certificate so won't need the newer biva certificate
