Hello!

I need some advice. I have a modified 1987 1330C mini that has no engine number (there are two holes where the plate should be). I can't get insured without it as I keep getting asked for it so I think my only option is to get the engine re stamped. How expensive and time consuming is this? Thank you :thumbsup:

Doesn't it give an engine number on your V5 registration document?

Does it say 1330 on the log book or 1275?
If its 1275 just tell the insurance its the standard engine and you should be ok?
Ive got a similar problem, no eng number and the guy i bought it off removed the 1380 and put in the orig 1275 now dvla want proof! head off jobbie!!

Well your insurers can't argue with that - photocopy the V5 for them. You'd be as likely to have grief off the DVLA if you created your own engine number. I can't see what they're being *rec of the tum* about, if you've declared it as a 1330 they should realise the original number means nothing.

The engine size is declared on the V5 at 1330C so it's legit. I'm trying to get insured with Adrian Flux but their saying without the engine number (because my car is modified) my insurance is now invalid. Could this be because the car is insured for a fixed amount?

How's that going to work, who do you prove it to?

Make one up and just have it stamped on the block?

example = 12A 2A G01 999999

12A = A+ 1275 Transverse Mounted
2A = Carburetter Specification
G01 = HIF44 FZX1531, BFY Needle, Red Spring - 10.1:1 Compression Ratio - Servo Assisted Brakes - 95 Ron Unleaded petrol - Open Loop Catalyst - Pre-engaged starter - Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints - 3.105:1 Final Drive

999999 = specific number (doubt anyone has this?)

All taken from Guessworks site - http://www.guess-wor...ical/engine.htm

I think I've seen some Blank VIN/Engine No plates advertised somewhere?

Hi,

Are you positive that the number is not stamped directly on the block? My Japanese Cooper seemed liked it had no number, just the two rivet holes. After scraping some dirt and rust from the spot on the on the head, the numbers showed up (12A2EJ34).

Hope it helps,

Ivan

Might be worth trying a different insurer as an engine number is not a legal requirement. Even if you knew the original engine number it now doesn't mean anything as the engine has been modified. My V5 has Not Known as the engine number too :-

That is VERY interesting as im insured with Flux, with a 1275 bored to 1330. The block had to be decked 10 thou and as a result the engine number plate was removed - they NEVER asked for the engine number!

Sounds like they have something from DVLA telling them you don't have an engine number on the V5 - mine V5 still has the old engine number on it though. As far as im concerned - the tax is the same on a 1275 or a 1330 so have not rushed to get the plate done or tell DVLA.

Yours is still the same engine for all the number tells nothing about the engine spec.

I can't see why an insurance company should get excited if the details match the V5 and you've correctly declared the details to them.

no engine number makes it an easier car to steal and more difficult to trace parts, not that it apears the police bother, looking for example the re-vins going to the usa with no changes it apears, apart from a vin plate and proberly not evan the numbers removed from the scuttle
