What methods are there for cleaning a K&N type air filter (cone)? apart from using the manufactures spray stuff.

Can it just be washed? Wanting to do this on the cheap so not really wanting to buy the cleaning kit :D

Any suggestions?

Ta,

Simon

I thought the oil spray was applied after you cleaned it to aid the filtering ability of the element?

C'mon!? £7 isn't that expensive, is it? You don't need to buy it from MiniSpares - any place selling K&N filters sells cleaner kits too... But personaly I wouldn't risk damaging the filter material with anything or destroying the filter's ability to breathe with the wrong oil...

I love washing & oiling it with the K&N stuff - smells lovely :D

For the K and N kits, the oil is quite a light oil and is needed to actually filter the air, if you just wash it and leave it, you might as well not bother putting it back on lol you do need that light oil in the kit

The oil I have, proper K&N stuff, just not the cleaning stuff. If the alternative methods to cleaning has no benefits and risks damaging the filter i'll just go and find the recommend K&N foam. :D
