thats not the point....do you put oil in to the engine? as with most 2 stoke engines, this then goes below the piston to lubricate the crank n pistons etc, then the port opens it passes above the piston pushing out the exhaust fumes whilst at the same time some fresh charge also exits the cylinder to ensure all burnt exhaust fumes are out the engine...these un-burnt parts obviously go out the exhaust, then fuel and air mix...which also has oil in then gets burnt..which then gets pushed out by the new fresh charge and as such is exhausted intot he air along with the now burnt oil...weather you can see it or not, its still there

good for you...think what you like but doesnt mean your right

I was passed a few weeks ago on the A34 by a Mini Sprint on the way back from Beaulieu with the distinctive Castrol R smell.

That was me :))

As far as Castrol R being illegal for the road, what a load of cobblers!

The only reason it isn't used more is that;

1) It stinks, for some strange reason not everyone likes the smell.

2) Historically it has been very expensive when compared to mineral oil.

& 3) As has already been stated it does tend to oxidize quickly compared to modern mineral oils.

Having said that as long as you change it reasonably frequently (around every 1,500 - 2,000 miles) and allow it to warm up on cold mornings, remember it's a monograde oil so is a lot thicker when cold than when hot, you will have many years happy & smelly motoring.

As far as protection is concerned, mineral oils have certainly improved over the years and the protection in extreme conditions is in all fairness as good if not marginally better than R nowadays. The film strength & resiliance of R is still superb particularly in the Mini with its oil being shared by the engine & the box.

Running R is a bit of a labour of love nowadays, but it is still a cracking oil that does what it should. I use it because it reminds me of my youth & it still works well if you know how to use it.

Finally, you can't mix R & mineral oil, if you do the whole lot sort of curdles. An engine run on R must be built using R. However for the authentic wiff, stick some in your SU dashpot or maybe a couple of capfulls in your tank (as long as your C/R is not too high). You get all the retro whiff without any of the aggro.

But remember to watch out for PC plod ;-) Ha, ha, ha!

If a 4 stroke a series engine smells of oil, piston rings or valve steams are worn.
Old cooper S' smells more just because their valve steams are used to drink oil like it was beer..
And yes, Castrol R oil smells a bit more than the other oils, but its more suitable for racing engines as it works with higher temperature. If you use your car for less than 50 miles a day, it wont get hot enough to burn residues and it will leave white gummy deposits. Use a good quality oil and dont make your choice like you do for a fragrance, because oil is the blood of your engine and your gearbox.

I have just checked with a mate of mine who is a traffic officer, that's a police traffic officer, not one of the rolling road block busy body ones.

There is absolutely nothing illegal about running an engine on the public highway that is lubricated with vegetable based lubricants, just the same as there is nothing against the law when running your diesel Landrover on second hand curry or chip oil (as long as you pay the duty of course).

If however your vehicle is producing excess smoke or is judged by an individual officer to be causing a hazard or nuisance to other road users, you can be nicked, but that is exactly the same regardless of what type of lubricant you are using. An individual officer could charge you with "causing a hazard or nuisance to other road users" if he so chose to do so, but if the only grounds for doing so were that you were using a vegtable based lubricant in your engine the chances of you getting found guilty if it (ever) got to court would be mighty slim indeed.

I hope that this has cleared up any confusion that may have been caused earlier in this thread.

Its is illegal

A few of my scooter mates been stoped for it

PMSL what a load of balls!!

A few of my mates have used Castrol R for YEARS.
If you don't beleive me, ring up Slark and ask Brian about Matthew Blanchards 7Port. Brian had to empty the engine of the oil and it had been sat for a few months. Over time Castrol R turns to a Jelly-like substance, onyl way to get it out is power wash the internals.

As mentioend before though you can't mix Castol R and mineral oil. You can only run Castrol R on a FRESH BUILD engine. As in one thats been cleaned and never had oil in it since.

Illegal oil, oh dear, what next? 10" Falkens illegal in the wet due to them being so dangerous? Fly-off handbrakes illegal because they allow "fun"??
