Wheel banding Hmmmmmm,
Dont quote me but I believe that banded wheels are actually not road legal. They are fine for competition use but for a road car a no.no.

Banding used to be done - to great effect - when wider wheels were not readily available, and mostly on larger diameters, not so often on 10" wheels. I suggest you just buy some wider wheels rather than get into the dubious legality and possible safety issues of banded wheels! There are MANY wide Mini wheels around !

Good oppurtunity to clear this issue up, there is no 'Grey area' concerning these - Basically one day someone decided to start a rumour that Banded wheels are illegal in the UK.

They are not

This is a Reply Direct form VOSA - having been given the exact details of Banded Steels:

There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose.
Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100.
Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude.

Yours sincerely

So, Just like you can fail an MOT on incorrect/shoddy welding to structural/load bearing areas on your mini - The same is applicable on wheels as they are obviously load bearing.

So if they've been made incorrectly - bodged together and are downright dangerous - They will fail you an MOT (and god forbid should you decide to fit them regardless), If they've been made correctly there is no problem.

WideWheels make them properly.... If you buy them 2nd hand - take them to a professional for their opinion on the construction before fitting.

If only - Original Mini steel wheels were Held together using about 4 Big Old Rivets inserted hot,... if I remember correctly (or were they huge plug welds?)
