Hi!

I need all the information I can get about the late Rover 1275cc engine with HIF38 carb, as fitted to the 'Sprite' in the 90's (wehn Coopers got the fuel injection).

What exhaust did they come with (cast single piece manifold? Is it larger than a 998's exhaust?)? What distributor? Did they have a cat? What carb needle?

And I need to know what fuel pump & fuel lines they were fitted with; I guess a single injection-engine fuel line and a special fuel pump with larger inlet? And what about emission stuff, carbon canister, what are the little vacuume connection to the thermostate for? And so on... :ermm:

And if someone has pictures of one of those engines (or engine bays) fitted with all the original equipment - I'd love to see them :)

Many thanks in advance!! :)

Cheers,
JAn

If you're talking about Rover 1275 with hif38 fitted also to BOC minis and the italian job se then: exhaust has a cat, manifold looks the same cast fitted to standard 998 so i think its the same, rover had different manifolds only the cooper engine, more similar to the old design but with the inlet on the same casting. Now i dont remeber which carb needle they come out with, but its written on hynes. Fuel pump was still mechanical.

Yes, that's the sort of engine I'm talking about! :ermm:

Ok! Thanks so far! :)

Yes, it looks a bit like 998, but has a square flange (=no 998!). If it has two downpipes, it's the metro item. If not - it's something else. The 1275GT, as far as I know, for example had a manifold looking like a 998 one but with a larger internal diameter... I know they had a mech. fuel pump - but which?

There's a mech. fuel pump which has a larger diameter inlet for use with a single injection fuel line. And I have a feeling those engine were equiped with them :)

Cheers,
Jan

as you've already been told really, standard cast manifold, CAT, charcoal cannister, HIF 38, fuel pump had the 5/16 inlet (minispares part number WND10005)

My mayfair would have the same engine spec as yours and is a late carb model being a 94'

The manifold system on it as standard was actually the cast Carb cooper spec manifold which has a larger knuckle than the 998 manifold. (when i questioned this i was told rover did this to use up parts) this is a one piece manifold with a thermal insulator block.

The down pipe when straight down to the cat with no flexi joint and had a boss welded ready for a lamba sensor or what ever.

The cat was just a standard cat with a single box side exit exhaust.

The fuel pump is a standard pump but with off set outlets (in a slightly different orientation to 998 pumps.

The fuel lines is a single line but it has a return line which is linked to the charcoal cannister recirc system and has a flashback valve where it goes back to the tank.

The vacuum plugs on the thermostat housing are for a temp switch which allows the gases to be released from the cannister when the engine gets up to temp. the switches are still available at about £25.

Im on my second mini which had this spec on it (from 93 onwards until they stopped doing carb models) the shells are generally SPI spec - my wiring loom even has a diagnostic plug in the engine bay (which does nothing)

On my first mini i took all the charcoal cannister system, cat etc off as my local garage said i didnt really need it.

hope this helps

Unfortunately, my 94 sprite is in for welding otherwise i'd be able to get you a picture.

I have had the cat removed from mine as well. Should give a few extra bhp from what i have heard.

As said before shell appears to be same as spi with the washer fluid bottle in the boot.

Thanks heaps, guys! :) :ermm: - all questions awnsered! :)

Interesting to see that it has the blanked heater take off on the head, but a temp. sensor. That's a new one to me :)

Oh - one more question: the air filter housing. I guess it's the same as the 998 one? :P

Cheers,
Jan

No, it isnt, and the hs4 air filter casing wont fit on a Hif38 carb

Exactly, it will fit Hif44 but not the Hif38..
by the way Air filter casing for hif also looks different because of the different air intake, hope someone will post up a pic..
