If you're spraying then nothing less than a 50ltr tank, which is good for panels / doors etc... but whole car your realy need to be looking bigger... also cfm wise I'd say 8 and above...

If your considering grit/sand blasting, then double the above..

I have one of these, Machinemart clickylinkand it's great for things like impact wrenches, and not bad for spraying, but you do have to wait every so often for it to re-charge..

Would that sort of size be ok to do underside spraying... i.e. hammerite?

As GW says, 8cfm or above. Also something else to bear in mind is that direct drive give more power, but get hot were as belt drive give slightly less power but don't suffer from the heat transfer as it has no drive shaft.

you should not spray with a compressor that is any less than 100PSI. Although it does depend on what gun you use. I havnt used gravity feed guns before so am not sure what sort of PSI you will need to pull the paint out the gun.

How about this one, apart from the 7.6cfm, Machine Mart are a rip off imo. http://www.screwfix....=86251&id=73259

For HVLP you need to be looking at between 12-14CFM

However if you want to get that big a compressor you are looking at the 3 Horsepower ones which need to be hardwired on a 40amp supply like you cooker.

Im currently trying to find a 2.5Hp compressor which can do about 12CFM as you can still use them on a normal 13Amp supply!

ive got a compressor steve, its 16cfm, and has a 150 litre tank!

only problem was wiring! ive still not got a supply, and its curently running with a 35amp mini fuse and no cover on teh plug!!!! highly unsafe i know.... but it was used like that to spray my whole car! when we get teh garage fitted out we will get a proper feed for it!

dont get a cheap oen for teh sake of having one steve.... its just not worth it!
