Hello
I have a 1992 Mini city e, and the right door window has always been a bit of a struggle. Recently it broke - first it went up ok, but at the top it went lopsided with one side all the way up and the other down diagonally, and I needed to really force the handle to get it squared up. This kept happening, and then one day it started going up diagonally almost all the time - it would go down ok but then when you put it up it just looked silly and took me a lot of effort and grunting to get it closed again.
I have just taken all the gubbins off to have a look, and I have found some rust and bowing on one of the metal window sliders, that the mechanism attaches to. I will obviously replace/fix that, but my worry is with the mechanism itself, which is over a hundred pounds to buy new and quite hard to find.
I have removed it from the car, and my worry is that the two bits that go in the runners don't stay level with each other all the way round. The 'master' arm always appears a bit lower than the slave arm. Should I be replacing this too?

Is My Window Regulator (winding Mechanism) Broken?

Got a regulator from Mini Mine in Stoke off a car they stripped and it was a fiver, also they are on ebay fairly often. Make sure that the bit that goes onto the glass is in the right position before bonding it to the window otherwise you will have even more trouble.

The regulator can be a bit of a *rear end* to fit too

Most of the time if the window has dropped on one side its the window channel that the regulator slides into, they rust really easily.
This is for one side (can buy as a kit also).

So you think it is likely that it is just the guide bar, and nothing to do with the mechanism?

If the regulator is running smoothly then I wouldn't think it be that.
Take the door card off and wind the window down half way, you can inspect the channels then.

Ah it's ok, fixed now - the mechanism had uncogged itself because the runner was rusty and bowed and was hard to push up - we wacked the thing against the floor until it recogged and hammered down the copper plate so it shouldn't uncog again - and cleaned out the rust and crimped the runner.
Happy days.
