a big screwdriver usually works. you could get a bit of old radiator hose and put a large spanner in one end and use the pipe as a handle?

Mine was doing this just two days ago and found it was the starter sticking. I did the insulated pliers on the solenoid thing but doesn't tell you whether its the starter or solenoid really. I used a meter onto the lead at the starter and it showed the voltage at the starter so I knew the solenoid was ok.

I removed the starter, reattached with one bolt ( so on the outside and did again, just to confirm the starter wouldn't spin ( as got told it could be the engine stuck ?!?!

However, it was the starter, I undid the small nuts and immediately found two of the four prongs/bushes inside were stinking and not sat right. I cleaned it up and hey presto. We have life.
