Thanks for the comments Jack.

Now how about this, 2 updates in one weekend!!

After all the problems I had with paint at the front, it kept going through my mind that the rear has at least 3 different layers and despite Bar Coat, what happens if the base is not stable.

I caught the door frame when trailing the doors last week and the paint chipped off a bit too easily.

A bit more playing around and it soon became clear that when the car had been painted over the original factory finish it had not been prepared very well.

Regardless of the work already done, the paint had to come off!

So, armed with a scraper the tedious task began

Posted Image

It reminded me of the guys in the Bangladesh chop shop with their hacksaw blades. I almost expected Bernie to pop his head over the fence and start shouting "gerra shift on wiw ya"!

What suprised me most was the ease at which the paint came off back to the factory finish.

You can't really see it in the photo but in some parts, a good T cut would bring the paint up like new, showing that it had never been flatted properly in the first place.

Posted Image

I also found a couple of filler bits where it has had a slight bump in the past.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Now, can anyone point me in the direction of a book showing how to teach a cat to rub down paintwork?

Posted Image

A few hours of work over the weekend and most of it is done. Including new filler onto bare metal and profiled correctly.

Posted Image

Still have the other side and some of the roof

Posted Image

What anoys me the most is that I didn't do this in the begining. Inexperience or lazy? Probably a bit of both, but I feel much happier now it's been done.

Hopefully have a few days off work this next week as I have holidays still to use before the end of the year. If all goes well it shoud be back in freshly coated primer very soon.

Thaks for looking

Regards

Steve

Mm, shame you couldn't rope the cat into helping, I can only imagine that rubbing down paintwork must be pretty dull, and especially not fun now it's turned colder, but I'm sure it'll all be worth it when you get a fab and long lasting finish when final paint occurs!

Good work, Zoe surely must be excited!

The reason Ben painted it like that is because he wanted it on the road for winter, so they didn't have to drive elisha i think.

Kinda quick winter project!

Getting there though Steve.

Don't cats have rough tongues? You could rub a sardine over the paintwork but you might be in trouble with the mrs when your moggy coughs up a colour coordinated firball!

Minimininut. I'll keep working on the cat. The cold isn't too bad as all that scraping keeps you warm.

Jack. I looked at Ben's project thread a while back and whilst it wasn't the best paint job in the world the paint I have the main problem with is the layer before. Underneath anything that Ben did.

Nice work Steve(oh and Dots is just about to be painted)

Shifty. I seem to recall "race to the paint" but i don't remember a bet. Especially if there was a mention of money, certainly don't remember that!!

Ethel. That may be the case but as a long standing veggie who can't stand the smell of fish your suggestion, although it has potential, does not feature too highly on my list. No offence!

Obiwan, not seen that book anywhere. I did have a look a while back for "the dummies guide to restoring a mini" and figure that's how I ended up on here !!

Hi Guys & Girlies, Merry Christmas to you all.

Just a brief update & some pictures, nothing too exciting.

I had a few days off work just before Christmas & the idea was to get some work done on the mini and get some paint back on after the issues that I had.

The first day................

My timing was impeccable! Dedication or stupidity? I'll let you decide.

After the first day the weather was so cold that any work was out of the question. Got Christmas out of the way, (cracking Christmas dinner at our favourite Indian by the way) and come boxing day, escaped the outlaws and into the garage!

Finished the rubbing down in & out before washing the whole car off.

And then on with the bar coat again inside and out.

If the weather holds I'll get some primer on tomorrow.

That's it for today. Told you it was a short one.

Best wishes for a super 2010.

Steve

Just read the project from start to finish ... All I can say is 'Wow!' :)

You have some serious skills there, Steve! I love the attention to detail that you're putting in - It really makes the difference between a nice car and a well-loved rebuild.

Can't wait to see the car painted! :)

Will be keeping my eye on this one!! :P
