Hi all,

Please don't shout at me if this is completely stupid.

I have searched the forum, I am sure this has been asked before but cannot find the topic.

I have a pair of Alpine SPS-69C3 6 x 9" speakers I am not planning to use again.

Is it possible to use them as a subwoofer?

My head-unit has a subwoofer pre-out so I know i'll need an amp.

If not i'll sell them on.

Please be gentle if a stuipd question!

Thanks in advance.

It can be done but they probably won't like it and will blow after a while. When fiddling with my amp ive flicked on the low crossover on and they went all bassy, not as good as subs though.

you could use them as a subwoofer,, although it would be kinda pointless..
reason being that even if you hook and amp up to the speakers and run a low pass filter etc... the bass response of the speaker will still only be as good as running it full range, the speakers characteristics will not change you are just eliminating certain frequencies.. 6x9 are not the best at anything they are just a good all rounder. 6x9's mounted in the parcel shelf and correctly phased can produce a nice amount of bass,, ok not enough to rattle your teeth out but good enough for general listening. my recommendation would be to run them direct off a head unit in the parcel shelf, or amplified with a full range signal for flexibility.
if however they are already in the shelf then u really need to get a dedicated subwoofer.

Why not buy some proper 6x9 subwoofers?

You could wire them in that way but they don't have the frequency response to be classed as "subs"
Subs work on bass frequencys(i.e 20hz-1.5khz) which 6x9s dont kick out a great deal of.
I'd sell them and buy proper subs geared up for it if you want some nice low end sound.

im thinking of doing exactly what nick is explaining. i did have a subwoofer at one point, and was planning to buy an amp and install it, but i realised i was going to be left with no bootspace at all, and i didnt want to remove the spare tyre to mount the sub on the boot floor.

i currently have 2 6x9's in the parcel shelf, and 2 under the rear seats, and im thinking of installing a small amp to power 2 of the 4 speakers, making them makeshift subs. that way its more practical. Plus i got the speakers for next to nothing and dont want to fork out money for 6x9 subs.
