David, I note that you are using a 253mm solid standard sierra setup on the rear.
I'm going to get the same parts tomorrow (disks, calipers and carriers) and fit them.
I'm correct in saying that I need all 3 because the carriers should pull the caliper inwards towards the middle of the wheel this providing more space. Although thinking about it the calipers might be the same but I have butchered one with an angle grinder to see if it would fit do best get a pair away!
I'll take some pictures and upload tomorrow.
The fronts are progressing nicely, hopefully they should look like this:

Yes, I'm using 253mm solid discs and the relevant calipers and sliding carriers to suit.

I have never done this conversion so please confirm before buying any stuff.

All three items will be needed including the calipers as they are for vented discs and are too wide for solid discs, I would post a picture of mine but I have run out of space on here but they fit nicely under 13" minators.

Found a picture on the locostbuilders site which has the best view of the brake caliper clearances

The spring is well out of the way with my wheel offset, it looks as though it would hit with the other picture but there is plenty of space

Cheers, pictures are worth a 1000 words.
I'm know to my parts supplier pretty well so they will be on sale or return!
Out of interest what brakes are you using up front? Standard or uprated?

I used this setup from rallydesign, as mine is bike engined it should be very light and these brakes should be well up to the job.

If I had used a car engine I would have probably used these brakes

I wasn't able to get a set of calipers or carriers today, so no trial fitting of brakes! :-(
Instead the wiring nearly got finished just a couple of bits of trunking to go and fit it all into place.
Although I have indicators and a fog light and lovely blue dials.

The differences between a normal sierra caliper for a rear 253mm disc and a sierra cosworth caliper for a rear 273mm disc
Standard Sierra on the left and cosworth on the right

Although the rear brakes still didn't fit :-(
My wheels have a slight taper so they get narrower towards the mounting flange where they touch the hub.
Hey ho, back to the drawing board

Hello,

It's so long ago that I done the brakes I forgot I have a 8mm spacer, the brakes just touched the hub near the mounting area so I added the spacer and slghtly longer wheels studs which I got from Rally Design.

If you don't want to do that, the kit car chaps use I think a mk3 fwd 240mm escort disc brake and a laser cut brake carrier mounting plate using the sierra solid calipers you have just got, locostbuilders.co.uk should be a good place to look into that

Been busy sorting out the rear brakes.
It took abit of head scratching, cheers David for the references, you have to reference the disc diameter and it's offset then you have to consider the offset of the caliper and it's optimum position on the disc. Also it has to fit in the wheel!
I have opted with a 240mm fiesta front disc to be placed on the back.
So as my car isn't standard on the rear, due to the upright, I had to come up with my own bracket.
With the rears figured out, the fronts are next!

Although when fiddling around I have noticed that I have one odd wheel, one has a different offset than the rest! I wondering if they will give me a refund 4 years later!

Who supplied the wheels?

I had a problem when MWS supplied my wheels and tyres, they supplied 3 medium compound AO48R and 1 soft compound. They refused point blank to put the situation right at there cost. A lesson learnt never do business with them again and I wouldn't recomend them to anyone

I can't remember who supplied the wheels but they are scuffed, so I doubt they would ho outlet anything.
Sort the brakes today and I'm quite pleased how they turned out, centralised in the caliper and the pad sweep is perfect on the edge of the disc.

Looking good buddy the breaks looked like a right head ache for a while.

Just wondering do you do all your own machining? Pretty cool skill to have that one, not to mention the big boys toys

Hi Trac,
Well the lathing down of the hubs I gave to my handy machinist who also does my Ali-welding.
However all the other stuff I do myself. It might take me a while as I don't have any posh tools, (as a don't have space for a man cave) just the basics, grinder, drill, files, sockets.

For the fronts I have found out that mondeo's have a 278mm vented disc that's 24mm thick and has the same 63.4 centre bore hole.
However I need to investigate the offset, as if it isn't enough I will need to bite the bullet and go for a 2 piece disc up front to get the required offset.
