Just got Halfords to make up 1litre of paint. Says Holts dupli color on plastic tub. What thinners do you use with this, as guy in halfords did not know. Tried a test on the car and spot on colour match, which is good considering other posts with paint from halfords. Using this to brush paint under the arches and under floor so everything body colour but a bit on thick side and need it thinned. Basically just to freshen up paint under here then using 'dynax s50' on seams and any areas like sub fame etc.

Says contains xylene and butyl alcohol. Is this not what hammerite own brand thinners has got? So could I use this as have some of this at home.

So can you still quite easily buy cellulose then? The paint shop I was in today said they stopped selling cellulose ages ago, and they can't sell to the public, just for commercial users. He did say that you could still get it for vintage / classic cars, so does the mini count as this? Did the halfords guy ask what it was for?

Just curious, as I hope to do some spraying at some point in the future

Thanks
Craig

The guy in halfords said it was the same as what they sold in spray cans which is acrylic?. Not very helpful in the shop.
If it is acrylic would using cellulose thinners to thin it cause a problem?.

I dont work on parts, but aarently its a "cellulose hybrid", and it looks as though cellulose thinners work ok. It is illegal to sell cellulose now, and legally I beleive we are not allowed to mix up 500mls or more in a go- we have to do little bottles of it- UNLESS its a metallic colour??? Laws are stuid......

Tried with cellulose thinners today and seems to work and no brush marks as well as paint taking a bit longer to dry. Will finish this on friday. Looking good what I have done so far.

Only the underside of car and under the wheel arches so not seen. But finish so far good and as over the top of the stoneship good. Before thinner used when painted the paint was drying to quick and seemed to drag with brush but now seems to stay smoother with out the brush dragging it. Found the trick when doing this was to paint a bit at a time and not go over what you painted 20-30 seconds before as it gets tacky with drying and drags. But to do another bit then go back to what you have done when dry and carry on painting next to it. Does not take that long to get touch dry about 15- 30 mins. Will take pictures later next week of what I have done then using this method. Will take some before I finish pics so it can be compared.

You can still easily get it. I bought 5Litres of "Standerd Cellulose Thinners" from my local auto factors about 5 months ago, and last time i went in there they still had it on the shelf.

They didnt ask what it was for, come to think of it, they didnt even ask me for ID.
So i think that thing about cellulose is a myth lol

I am also brushing in parts of my paint work, mainly chips and scratches, allong with the scratch+mark where my dad dragged a ladder accross my re-painted wing (boy was i *drunk* OFF!)
and you honestly can tell the difference between the brush painted, and spray painted sections.

I've found that general thinners works with Halfords paints - and is also a lot cheaper than celly thinners....
