Halfords Colour Match Brg Is Shocking!

Now obviously no-one expects to get a great colour match with a rattle can, but.... I have used halfords rattle cans for repairs over the years on my BRG mini, and the colour match has been reasonable.
However, recently I did some repairs and I kid you not, the colour match is terrible! it is a totally different shade of green. To be honest , it looks like a metallic version of brooklands green.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? or maybe its just a dodgy batch of cans? Dissapointing because the repairs are otherwise good, and took me a fair bit of time!
Cheers

There is more than 1 BRG
Well, mine is pre 1997 so it's BRG metallic. After that they changed to BRG pearlescent. I think earlier cars maybe had non-metallic?
What others do you know of ?

However one thing I did notice, the cans recommend you use grey primer as a base. As I'd got a bucket load of white primer cheap I just went with that, seemed to work out ok.

I must admit to using a colour top coat from Halfrauds last year on boris just to get a non porous topcoat down to protect him

I then got some paint mixed by a local Paint factors, granted it was a hell of a lot more expensive but worth it methinks

here boris just after spraying him with the right match of COF 89 Flame Red

during

After

8 months afrer rattle can respray pic taken a couple of week ago

I only sprayed both his doors,A panels and the front panel under his lights i never touched the wings so the wings are original paint and the doors A panels and front panel from a can

some of the panels in the second piccy look a bit dull and pinky but i was in the middle of buffing up at the time with Farecla but once that was done i think you can see in his latest pic how well the paint match is and how well its stood up to time

Moral of the story if you want a good match go to a Auto Paint Factors not Halfrauds

You can actually get a perfect or near as damned it with a rattle can if you go to a propper Auto Paint Factors.
I must admit to using a colour top coat from Halfrauds last year on boris just to get a non porous topcoat down to protect himthe weight of paint that was supposed to be in the can and what was actually in there didnt really bare any resemblance and the can soon ran out

Wow great work I am doing the same thing as I do not have a compressor, gun etc, I have sprayed one panel at a time, then the doors, boot, bonnet.
Finish is a bit orange peel so I have the flatted down with 1500 then g3 and a final polish, hard work all by hand but you do what you have to with the tools you have.
Will post some pics when I get the bits buffed up.

I dont envy you though having to compound by hand

I had a deal going with my partner though, shy said if i could do a panel by hand and show her you could get decent shine back then she would buy me a proper electric polisher

I did and she did

People tend to think its easy with an electric buffer but to be honest though its far easier than by hand it still takes practise though once youve mastered the technique it becomes easier

Some of the other Panels on Boris are mismatched though but that happened before i got him

The A panel had been replaced and the monkeys at some dodgy backstreet garage had conned the previous elderly owner

they had sprayed it tottally the wrong shade then sprayed thinned paint and blending thinners onto the perfectly good panels to disguise it

So now the bits i sprayed perfectly matches the original paint but not the panels they made a *male chicken* up of

So very soon ill be doing a few of the other panels using the Same Method

Thats just a temporary tidy up after that its another DIY paint job using a fence sprayer type thingy

dont worry about orange peel and drips you can allways sand them out so long as you layed enough paint on

Sorry but that did make me laugh. There are at least 12 Leyland British Racing Greens, several of which were used on the Mini. It doesn't just come down to the paint type. There are several Diamond Whites too from many different companies as it's a popular name. I believe that the Leyland Flame Red name covers more shades than any other paint, including black. When you buy paint, buy it by the code not the name.

ive seen the system they use for the paints and it is a table of how much of each colour and tone of the paint to put in to get your colour. dont be miss led by the advert that is on dave all the time. where the guy walks in and said "i need some red paint for my car"
shop guy replys "oh that will be flame red then" it doesnt work like that
