Are all the vacuum and breather pipes attached correctly?

I think so, this is my first mini so if somebody put them on wrong during it's life I wouldn't know but everything is connected up.

New problem, adjusted the carb and now it will run on idle but theres still something wrong. If I slowly depress the accelerator pedal then it will gain revs till its fully depressed but if I punch/gun the accelerator then it will either die or splutter then die but if if I release the pedal before it dies it will get back to idle.

Was thinking of taking off the carb and taking it apart then degreasing/cleaning all the parts then rebuilding it but I've heard of people doing this then not being able to get the car to start again.

Sounds like when you punch the acclerator it floods the engine momentarily with too much fool, I don't know whether this is a fault with your car or whether all cars would do it.

That makes sense, I was thinking that the petrol was getting restricted somehow so when I pushed on the accelerator there wasn't enough fuel getting to the cylinders but there was more air getting in making the mixture extremely lean.

I don't have to fully depress the pedal either for it to spluter it just has to be a quick push, I'm just worried that when I do get it back on the road for the first time and I shift it into second it's going to die because I'll need to depress the accelerator alot quicker then what I would taking off.

Thanks for the fast reply Jammy.

I would say if it is idling ok now it should be ok to drive, at least until you can get it to a rolling road and have it set up properly..

I do have a life outside TMF, honest!

If it wasn't for a flat tire I would have tried driving up and down the small private road to see how it does while moving but the foot pump is at one of my relatives at the mo.

Also worried that it's gonna die during the smoke test at the MOT centre but I've got plenty of time till I take it for a test.

I'm not saying anything

With regard to this one, is the dashpot oil present and correct?

It probably needs a top up, what oil should I use?

I was going to suggest the dashpot, but you had mentioned earlier in the thread that it had been checked. Oil to use would be engine oil, 3-1, auto transmission fluid.

This thread may help ... if it's not too confusing!

Yeah I did check the dashpot and there is oil in it but it could probably use a top up or might renew all the oil, anyway to get the old junk out as I don't know how long it's been sitting in there and I don't know what they used.

Ok had some 3 in 1 spare so I went down and put some in the dash pot (didn't know how much I was supposed to put in) and when I started it it seemed to run worst died a few times and I couldn't accelerate it at all but after a few restarts it sat at idle but was still spluttering when revving so I slowly increased the revs and it kept backfiring so I left it to run on idle for a few minutes then I depressed the accelerator pedal slowly at first but increasing the speed everytime until it ran without a problem even if I gunned the accelerator.

Don't know if it was the oil or it just needed a good run but it looks like its fixed, cheers for all the help guys.

You may of got some overfilled it a tad, which would mean it would burn it off in the first few minutes, was there any smoke coming out the exhaust?

I'd still try and get it to a rolling road, you wouldn't believe the difference it makes!
