Right Another one :genius:
Ive been asked this by somebody else and im not 100% sure myself >_<
If your filling a dent or similar imperfection whats the correct way to prepare the surface for Filling?
Do you sand to bare metal and then once at bare metal do you use kurust on the bare metal,or etch primer,or primer etc before applying filler or just fill directly to bare metal and put the various layers of etch, primer kurust on afterwards?

I know you cant just put filler over Shiny Paint as it needs something to grip to but can you just flat the paint and apply filler over that or do you need to go down to bare metal?

Any Help would be gratefully recieved :D

In the past i've drilled a series of holes depending on the size of your dent. just gives the filler somthing to lock to.

Just rough the paint as well and the filler should stick fine.

Then primmer and add your top coat when your happy.

Assuming its a "clean" dent with no rust, then if its deeper than about 15 - 20mm or larger than a hand, then I would be drilling a few holes in the bottom as mentioned above. Anything smaller, I just rough up the paint with 60-grit sandpaper, this gets rid of any wax or polish residues, and gives a rouh enough surface for the filler to grip.

If there is rust in the dent, you need to bare-metal it and treat/remove the rust first. Once done, rough up the metal with course sandpaper again.

The correct way as taught to body repaires is to always take down to bare metal before putting filler on.
no need to coat in rust killers or drill holes.
etch primer is never applied over filler, only bare metal.

Drilling holes before filler is ridiculous.
f
Filling over paint will leave massive sink marks too.

If your dent is 15-20mm deep then it needs beating or pulling before filling as that is quite a thickness really.

If there is bare metal around the edge of the filled area what do you do?
i know you need to etch bare metal but if you cant put etch over filler thats right next to it?

Thanx to Everybody :D
I havnt actually got a dent but was asked by somebody else today so thought id ask?

Im still confused though you rub down to bare metal fill with filler then when you feather the edges theres bare metal i cant see how you can spray etch primer onto the bare metal edges without getting it on the filler itself?

Any ideas?

I think what you're asking is what happens to the edge of the filler?

From the advice above, if you prepare the dent by removing the paint etc from it and say 2cm around the dent.

Fill the dent and sand, this should leave the filler and the 2cm extra you sanded around the edges, now use your etch primer on the exposed edges of metal around the dent, you can then primer filler/stopper as rq'd.

Does this help?

If i've mis quoted the advice then I'm sorry!!
