Hi there, just joined the 'forum' after purchasing a '92 Cooper (injection) - Wonder if anyone can hep with a most baffling problem that's really starting to bug me!
No initial problems with the indicators, but suddenly they've stopped working. Strange thing is the hazard switch works fine (all indicatorsd flash ok) but nothing when trying the column indicators switch! (all other column functions - horn, wipers, flash etc all ok)
I've checked the wiring diagram - not really helping, and checked all fuses, relays etc and all appear ok ........... what can it be ???? Anyone any ideas before I have to try replacing actual parts........

Indicator issue - Help please!!

try the flasher can, on a mini there are 2, 1 for indicators the other for hazards.
not quite sure on their positioning but 1 will be in the engine bay and the other will be around the steering coloumn , up under the pedals, well they are on mine
hope this helps

Thanks.
- Only problem is I've spent quite some time trying to find which relay under the bonnet is for the indicators (this is where the wiring diagram in the haynes manual doesn't help) With the injection mini's, there are four 'yellow' relays (all the same) - don't know what they do, but I've swapped them over to see if one's faulty - still no joy ??
The only relay I can find (easily) under the dash is for the hazards - and is ok.....
Cheers.

The SPI coopers have pretty much the same wiring as an 80's mini which means the indicator flasher unit is behind the dash ( three clocks ), the hazard flasher is a square thing over by the windscreen wiper motor..
If they have moved them, then sorry can't help... injection mins are evil voodoo powerd things !

As far as im aware Injection minis have 1 flasher unit that does both Hazards and indicators.
Awhile ago had problems with my brothers indicators on his 92 SPI
First problem was just indicators not working, turned out the be a dodgy hazard switch
(try putting your indicators on and pressing the hazard switch without turning the hazards on) i think this is because the copper connectors inside either wear or get dirty.
Second time it happened neither hazards or indicators worked, and using a multimeter found that there was 0.5v to the flasher unit so we traced it back to the inline fuse that powers the flasher. The fuse itself was fine, the problem was the inline housing were the fuse wasnt touching the contacts very well so no power.
Wedged the fuse in better, cleaned the contacts and the indicators/hazards instantly worked.
Since then we have had to tape the housing together as it kept falling apart
(luckly the fuse was wedged in so that it was stuck in one half of the housing and didnt fall out)

Yup that's right, injection Minis have a very different electrical system from others.
There's 1 flasher unit and a relay which activates the indicator system when the ignition is on. The problem is either that the relay isn't activating (but you seem to have eliminated that by swapping all the relays) or that the hazard switch is broken as it is the hazard switch which connects the indicator relay to the indicator switch when it is in the off position. Remove the switch and use a jumper of wire to connect together the two wires mounted in the connector as a pair on their own at one end. This will make the indicators work if the switch is at fault. If not then it could be the indictor switch, so try that in the same way by using a wire jumper in the connector block. Be careful when doing this that you are connecting together the correct wires using the colour code on the diagram. It is quite likely to be the hazard switch as they are a bit crappy.

I have had this very same problem! :saywhat:
Its been a sort of intermittent fault
I have tried to indicate and it doesnt work so i flick the hazard switch on and off and then it does work, wierd eh, I'm fairly sure the hazard switch is dodgy. The only thing is that the flashers have stopped working although dip still works for the headlights, and the horn has stopped working all together.
Im beginning to think its a problem with the indicator stalk itself, because the horn has been an intermittent fault and there seems to be a lot of play in the stalk itself meaning it moves around a bit too much,
Neway im going to have to sort it out before MOT time at the end of the month, I may just get a new stalk (about £40 from what ive seen) and take my chances

- Thanks to all who responded. Good news is they're now working. Not quite sure what I did but it does seem to be connected with the hazard switch - removing, cleaning, twiddlling etc seems to have done the trick !!!
Cheers all.
Cheers all.
