Do you have a Haynes manual? Get one as you will need it.

Yes to take off the flywheel you must remove the bolt (not nut) holding it in place. Also you must remove the key washer underneath the bolt. Then install the puller and pull the flywheel off, making sure the keyway slot in the end of the crankshaft tail is horizontal as you do so.

What you see inside the housing in your case is a pressure plate (and spring). The other photo you have posted shows a spring cover, not a pressure plate. Yours is a Verto / Valoe type clutch, the other photo show a pre-Verto type clutch. They are different systems with completely different parts. On a pre-Verto clutch the pressure plate is behind the flywheel as you look at it, on yours it's outside the flywheel.

i do have a haynes manual and under this particular section i found that it didn't go into very much detail. (sparating engine from transmission).

do you know the size of the head of the large bolt?

many thanks

It helps if you have both Haynes manuals.... as the LIGHT blue one from 1959 to the more modern cars has LOADS more info about rebuilds... sounds like you just have the DARK blue manual up to 2000 ish...... its best to be armed with both....lol..... As Dan says you have a Verto clutch... your other picture is a Pre verto commonly called diaphram clutch... all Dan says andmuch more is covered in the LIGHT BLUE haynes

Go to the clutch section, it goes into detail on removal. The large bolt has a locking washer attached to it; make sure you knock back the tabs from the slots in the flywheel.

I think the verto typre flywheel bolt requires a 30mm socket.

*Cough* 1"5/16ths same as the front hubs and the steering wheel, (depending on age of car).

There's also a yellow Haynes manual that is even earlier. As above, the light blue one has more information.

I have somehow got all three, and a Metro manual, and they're ever so useful!
