full list of UK mini production from the updated version of the chris rees book >_<

Thanks Anorak for updated worldwide production figures , does the updated version of the book still also include a list of UK only Mini sales from 1994 to 2000?
(I need these to enable Practical Classics to calculate more accurate percentage figures of UK Minis surviving, as the mag seems to have paid for some access to the SMMT / DVLA database for this kind of research for articles.)

no, the sales figures have not been updated

OK, Thanks again for looking!

Below is an example of the sorn and taxed details Practical Classics can access using the database, although they agree the Minis many variants and long production run make it a bit more difficult to research the figures/stats than for the few other classic cars they have published them for so far...............they also confirmed the DVLA data has listings for all variants like the Hornet, Elf, Van, Pickup and Morris/Austin/Rover models, etc.
Example:
Classic Survivors Practical Classics (April 2009 Issue):
Triumph TR5

1967-1968
Produced: 2947 (not including TR250 models)
UK sales: 1161 (39.4%)
Rest of World: 1786 (60.6%)

UK on the road, 2007: 375 (32.5%)
SORNed, 2007: 28 (2.4%)
Scrapped or AWOL: 758 (65.1%)

Endangered Species:
Wolseley 1100

only 25 left on UK Roads !

Well I remember it being reported in one of the Mini Magz (because they'd done some Mini research via the DVLA), that at one point (probably 2002), there were more Minis registered on the roads at that time, than there had been in previous years. Plus there's probably many hundreds or thousands sitting in garages and barns awaiting restoration, or just temporarily sorned.

Plus of course there's this: -

Unless Ethel's letter to the DVLA (see earlier post) comes up with an earlier result on this, I think we will have to wait until Practical Classics magazine publishes the latest DVLA figures, which they they have told me they are hoping to do later on this year as its the Mini's 50th.

(This months PC mag survival figures are for the Renault 14 (1976-83) at 33 left on the road in UK.)

I got a reply from DVLA which is the fob off I rather expected.

Rather than do any work themselves they hope they can farm their public information act responsibilities out to the private sector.

Apparently they've released 29 data fields of their database, they don't say what they are, to 5 companies.

Experian - [email protected]

GMAP - [email protected]

RL Polk - [email protected]

CarweB - 01732 373 002

Urban Science - [email protected]

They all have websites if you're interested, I haven't contacted any.

I don't really think the DVLA's response if really in keeping with the spirit of the Freedom of Information Act. A 3rd party shouldn't be in the position of making a profit out of public records in my opinion, at least not if the DVLA licence gives them an effective monopoly.

Good to see PC have access to SORN figures as well as 'on the road' figures.

I suspect the number fluctuates considerably depending on the time of year, for example my old daily drive now hibernates over the winter and wakes up again at this time of year. Anecdotally I've also noticed more classics on the road in recent weeks so I'm betting there's quite a few do the same as me.

Scary to see how few of some once popular cars are out there, as well as the Mini I'd be fascinated to know how many Austin 7s still survive as they were a pre-war equivalent to the Mini and were made in very large numbers. I suspect it takes a decade or two after production ends for numbers to stabilise as cars are scrapped, rust and disappear at a faster rate in the initial years as they are less appreciated or valued - I think this is probably the case for any classic car.

1,581,887 Minis sold in UK 1959-2000 according to this:-

http://www.orange.co...imecarsorangeuk

In 2002 there were 117,504 Mini Saloons and Estates, and 1,771 Vans and Pick-ups left on UK roads = 119,275 total

Approx. 7.5% of the 1,581,887 were left in the UK in 2002, so around 92.5% had been scrapped/written off or exported..........would be interesting to compare the current figures 7 years on?

As promised the latest DVLA figures for the Mini have just been published in the July 2009 issue of Practical Classics Magazine:-

5,505,874 Total produced
1,581,887 UK sales (28.7%)
3,923,987 Rest of world (71.3%)

Latest UK Statistics:
55,318 Minis left on UK roads today
34,095 SORNed

5.66% of the 1,581,887 are now left in the UK, so around 94.34% have been scrapped/written off or exported to date.

Survivor Breakdown:
Austin Mini: 38.3%
Morris Mini: 6.2%
Rover Mini: 53.8%
Riley Elf: 0.9%
Wolseley Hornet: 0.8%
