That's interesting but I must be missing something - surely it turns the cam in the wrong direction?

LOL If there wasn't the idle gear in between the other two it would go the wrong way ;)

Ethel, thats useful information. Thanks.

I dont appear to have any breathers at the moment though. The only other place to fit one as far as im aware is the top of the flywheel housing... unless im missing something?

The oil drain down from the tappets goes through the timing chain cover to lube the chain, so even with a belt you still need the oil passage behind it. I don't think there's any reason a breather is needed there, it was just a convenient place to put it when they designed out the tappet chest covers. It doesn't require any alteration of the engine casting and, as it's not in the main crankcase, there's likely to be a bit less oil flying round in the air to get sucked up. You might be able to modify a later belt kit if you really felt a need for a breather, the Minspares kit fits the usual 1/2" hose but the actual vent is tiny, I actually drilled mine out to 1/4" from something even smaller.

the gear kit that was mention was done by Sir J Stewart back in the 60ies if I remember correctly, its great for a while and then it wears out and fast,
You can not have enough breathers on the engine and if you are running High Compression and running to 8,5K the more so

Yeah, it was a bit of a blonde moment, but it was late ;) , since there's a transfer gear on the other end of the crank for exactly the same reason I don't really have any excuse though.

As for breathers, the original system of sucking air in the rocker cover and out of the crankcase seems good, I imagine it helps return the oil to the sump. The fuel pump and dizzy fittings offer some possibilities if they've been made redundant, you could even squeeze a small vent pipe in to the pump's spacer.

Crankcase breather is a bit of a generic term. It's fumes that get past the pistons, into the crankcase, that you're trying to extract. None of the 3 factory breathers are directly in the crank case; tucking them away over the transfer gears, timing chain cover, or tappet chest would help to avoid collecting too much of the oil spray that will be flying around off the crank.

if Slark is supplying MED with the gear drive kit, it sure doesn't sound like it from the MED description at: http://www.med-engin...mp;vlang_id=542

MED says "Our unique gear drive camshaft kit is manufactured to MED drawings 'exclusively for our own distribution' throughout various trade outlets.
The kit has been manufactured previously but had various faults. MED have redrawn the kit using ‘CNC auto CAD’ and re engineered the kit with the following modifications: "

The piece that holds the idler gear looks much different in the photos on the Slark and MED websites. Maybe MED redesigned the Slark unit.

Slark's website states that they supply MED, but perhaps two different versions are made. Either that or the Slark photo isn't current enough to reflect the design changes mentioned by MED.

Almost no one in Miglia is using gear drives.

An absolute jewel of a belt drive is shown at: http://www.shenginee...ingbeltkit.aspx
Pricing is roughly similar to the gear drive. Both are around 300 quid with the belt drive costing more.
This kit is widely used in Miglias and Sevens.
Uses an adjustable belt tensioner.
Beautifully executed design with quality fasteners. A gear puller is provided with the kit.

Somehow my earlier post didn't show the link I intended.

Here's the link to an excellent belt drive setup.
