First of all sorry to drag up an old post,

I came across this thread whist gooooogling how to spot a mini that had been re-shelled,

I'm currently restoring a 69 super and wanted to make sure the shell was genuine, it appears to be all correct bar later sills but there rotten as a pear so will soon be replaced,

I've been away from the mini scene for quite a few years and last weekends Gaydon mini show was my first in a long while, whilst wondering around I noticed alot of MK1/MK2 minis and many were obviouse reshells,

will get to the point soon, whist now knowing the tale tale signs of a re-shell, its the so called 'drip rails' that have me puzzelled, my mini has them many other mk1's and 2's do, but whilst wondering around the show admiring the minis on display i noticed that the first mini 621 AOK was missing these rails,

so, has this car been re-shelled? had them removed? or were they added later?

regards Matt

621 AOK was a pre production mini (built on a Easter bank holiday) so was really just a mash of pre production parts most lilkely they hadn't invented the idea of the drip rail in 59 so wasn't fitted. IIRC no very early mini had them anyway.

Early production Mini's did NOT have drip rails spot welded to the side roof gutters. The drip rail was introduced in approx May 1960.

i would like to add that a few 1971 minis have rod change with remote floor with a factory fitted plate over where the remote change would come into the car

the plate can realy be seen but you get the idea

Hi Boycie,

Not sure if you're able to update this at all - pics aren't showing for me and it seems like an excellent guide to what a real Mk 3 should look like.

Cheers,

Steve

Hi Sleeping Park Lane, I've fixed the links for the photos and made a few minor changes.

that's a remote tunnel. Not rod. The plate at the fromt you refer to is a magic wand aperture sealing plate. Mine has that.

Now. When I replaced my rear bins on my '71, I used later bins. Where can I get the ashtray type ones as per original spec?

I also need to discover whether mine should have 6 or 4 flute sills. They've been replaced about ten years ago and are currently 6 flute. Mine was registered early January '71.

Mine was registered September 71, and originally had four flute sills, so I'm guessing it's a good chance that yours would have had four flutes, and as you probably know, they changed to six flutes during 71.

Great bit of reading and reassures me that  my mini is a genuine MK 3 mini. Thanks for taking the time to research and post this. :)

Yea really interesting post!... just gives me doubts over my 1971 mk3 though!! I have loads of bits listed but not others.. pretty sure i've had loads of panels replaced over the years to some aspects are lost for newer parts.

The picture at the top of the page doesn't have the ignition key in the centre of the lower dash rail.. isn't that a mk3 normality??

Also, the thread said nothing about the headlining.. mine has the headlining in two removable frames similar to that of a mk1.
