Haha pressed enter before I'd typed anything!

My engine turns over again (after christmass and no oil pressure and then thinking I'd siezed it). Anyway... there's no oil coming out the pump.

can it be replaced without removing the engine?

Cheers!

have you tried repriming the pump? I believe you poor oil down the hole for the pressure relief valve, then rock the car back and forth with it in gear until the oil goes down into the pump, keep refilling until it doesn't go down any further, and try cranking it again to see if you get pressure.

I had it running, without oil pressure (obviously by accident) but it siezed when it cooled down and not when it was running. So when it warmed up (EG now from christmas) it started up again but still no oil pressure. So I've taken the plugs out and turning it over doesn't get any oil pressure. I've put 20-50 down into the Banjo bolt hole and still didn't pump anything out barely rippled whilst turning the engine over. Anyhoo... I've left it for a few days (currently away from home) so maybe it'll have soaked in by the time I get home.

Thing is I don't have an engine crane so it's difficult to get the engine out.

P.S sorry if it doesn't all make sense, few drinks have been consumed...

to be honest if it seized it doesn't sound good. Oil won't soak in, the chambers in pump are relatively large and should draw the oil in to them as they open, that's how it works. The oil can slowly drain out of the pump if it isn't sealed effectively though. How did you lose oil pressure originally, pumps can't really fail suddenly & dramatically without breaking metal - which you tend to notice.

Well it's a newly built engine with a new oil pump and bearings. The engine never completely siezed, it didn't want to turn over fast but as the temperature warmed up it's free off. It all got tight when it cooled down and it never stopped whilst it was running.

Talking to an engine builder he thinks that once a pump starts to pump it'll be ok but can be a right nuisence to get going in the first place.

Anyway, the pump may have been knackered out the box and thsu my question of can be it replaced with the engine in.

When you pour oil down the engine and turn the engine in the direction it runs, the oil will go down the hole.

If you are thinking it comes out of the hole or you are turning it so it does come out, you are doing it wrong.

Pump should have been primed with oil when fitted to the engine, then back filled down the hole using the method above. Turning the engine in the direction it runs and pouring oil into the hole. Oil filter should be filled up with oil before fitting. Then fill the engine oil to its correct level. Then cranking without the plugs in, should get the oil flowing and oil pressure up. Once this is done, then you should be thinking about starting your fresh built engine.

Yes it can be replaced in the car, you need to support/jack up the engine on the gearbox. You need to remove clutch housing, clutch/flywheel etc, then remove the transfer casing to access the pump. You will need replacement gaskets, clutch oil seal etc. Dont forget to drop the oil first also!

Was the rubber O ring between box & block left out on reassembly in error? That would point to lack of oil pressure.

are you sure it was actually locking up ?
was it just slow to crank ?
and have you got a mechanical oil pressure gauge or are you just using the pressure light ?

Indeedy a lot of cranking will drain the battery and bump up the resistance of the cables 'n motor as they get warm.

So glad I got annoyed with gettting the pump out and came here!

Thank you for pointing out that oil doesn't come out of the banjo bolt hole.

When looking at the engine from the front, how does oil circulate? I think I thought that the oil pick up was at the back left hand side, and so the pump pumped it up from the sump and then into the filter where it went around the rest of the engine.

The oil seal between gearbox and engine I thought wasn't under pressure as such as it was just getting pumped up from the gearbox through there. But I definately included one!!

How long would it take to circulate oil enough to have a reading?

Needless to say the car has now been fitted with a Tim Oil pressure gauge!

Thanks for the help!

you've got the oil circuit right, it gets sucked up into the block via the famous O ring. Leaves the block by pipe to the filter housing after the filter it goes in to the main oil gallery which has the oil pressure relief valve sat on the end. It can take an age to build up pressure as the pump as only got air to work with and is designed for oil. Priming everything you can with oil helps a lot, even so it can take minutes and run the battery flat more than once.

I think you should be turning the engine backwards if you're trying to fill the pump through the banjo connection, I think Jordie said otherwise so you may want a 3rd opinion to clear that up.

Well so far I think I know what to do. And I'm going to keep trying until I really can't get anywhere. I don't like the idea of having to take the pump out. Obviously I read something wrong and there we go! Still I'll try again later when I can grab an assistant! Thanks a lot everyone :D
