I looked into this as I wanted to get rid of mine. If your mini is 1981 or younger you need one for the MOT. So you're OK I think. Minis never had fog lights as standard in 1962 I believe.

The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.

No you don't need one at all, not for the MOT and not for any other reason. It's there for your safety though.

Or you could just use that red rag instead of waving it at the bulls :-

There are 2 basic principles:

Rules is rules - it'd just be advice if you were allowed to choose which ones to obey, An MoT only check you are obeying rules that apply to your car, and not all of them.

The law isn't applied retrospectively - if you did something legally it can't be made illegal after the event by a change of law. It even says so in the Human Rights Act. If you didn't need a fog light (or indicators, seat belts....) when they made your car, you don't, legally, need them now. Doesn't mean they're not a worth fitting though.

oh yeah i totally see the point as havin them wen its bad weather highlights your car to other road users so they dont rear end u,its happened to me twice now it its just not funny!!!and they were in daylight!!

technically i dont need seatbelts as they werent statuary till 1965 but iv still fitted harness's to help also lost a very good friend of mine in an accident in a mini n if hed av been wearing his belt he wouldnt have died from internal injuries

iv also binned the front number plate and got my mate to print some aluminium stickers and iv stuck them on my valance at the front as i dont need a vertically mounted number plate unless my car was after 73 i think

i kept smashing the one on my old mayfair off so i got a sticker on the bonnet of my reg but wen my dad was driving it too get its indicators and window wipers sorted he got pulled by the pigs they were giving him a tellin off for having the number plate on bonnet and race numbers on the door but no line through them,he got a producer for it but as he was saying why dont they go do some proper policing instead of petty things like this he nearly got taken in for being angry with them

this didnt make him very happy with me when he got back haha

A direct body mounted registration in paint or stickers is only permitted on very few cars, essentially those that were originally designed by the manufacturer to have the registration displayed like this in the years before the rules said it wasn't allowed. That pretty much means the Jauar E-Type and certain other race bred cars only.

That is not the case. I assume you are referring to the myth that if a system is fitted to the car it must work for the MOT. That clause only applies to hazard lights fitted to vehicles built before they became mandatory. This car was built before fog lamps were required so no part of the fog lamp system is required and none of it is testable.

so if its permitted on few cars how come alot of minis get away with it?u can still see the reg clearly if u stand back but up close it loks like its not there, just bending the rules abit,so is it or is it not ok as if its not needin to be vertically monuted i could tuck it under the bumper on the valance what u reakon??

yeh good that he said that as they do just take the mick because theve got a badge,iv been in bother in past too n they dont understand unless the situation is plain 'black and white' simple anyway they do some good tho otherwise itd be mayhem out there

i didntb think about the switch for them as they were just wired into the loom at eiter side of the boot so i just disconnected them, the cars abit of a frankensteins monster, got a rover fully seamwelded reshell in 1997 by previous owner and theres not much left of origional car i dont think other than the reg which is a shame but im tryin to make is as period as i can

got my s spec 11stud head engine,j.a.pearce mag wheels, speedwell seats, grill etc just need a boot n new dash really but ill get there (funds allowing)
