A phosphor bronze brush for a 20 gauge shotgun, within 10thou of 5/8", could be had for under a fiver.

The crank thread is 5/8 x16 Whitworth
Best regards,
And then in their next message this:

I was looking through some more modern manuals/doc last night, and found an amendment sheet dated 12/96.... fairly innocuous I thought until I read through them all...
This is the amendment sheet, the table details a change to the clutch repair/maintenance procedures...
This is the amended page in the manual..
Looks like Rover have done the dirty on us again....

Again it has been referenced in a *poor* way though - I would immediately assume M16 AF to be a 16mm socket needed, but it could equally be a 24mm as the usual socket size for an M16 thread?!

But that has only spcified a change in the retaining bolt head size hasn't it.

I'd tend to agree, same again, buried in the depths of some bloody amendment sheet in a manual which very rarely sees the light of day, and associated with the clutch and not the sodding engine....

I would say that the sheet is referring to the pressure plate to diaphragm bolts No.15 in the diagram, as there is no way a m16 bolt could hold the flywheel assembly on it's just not big enough.
Well I don't know about that. Those bolts are clearly described in the procedure description as pressure plate to flywheel bolts, while the note at the end describes the flywheel retaining bolt. It wouldn't be unusual for them to use two different descriptions for the same part though. If they really do mean an M16 (whether they've put AF or not) it wouldn't be undersized, after all the 5/8" bolt measures 15.875 ish mm diameter. I don't think they would have changed the thread though and as you say this doesn't describe a thread. I believe personally that if you were to strip a very late engine you might find a 16mm cap screw there and this is describing a 16mm AF Allen.
On another note, we have got things moving now. Martin at MRA Minis contacted me while the thread was locked with this :
Hi Dan,
I have spoken with Paul Ivey today, he tells me that it is a Whitworth 5/8" x 16 tpi Special, he still makes Mini cranks and has all of the last tooling to make the forged raw crank and machine them etc......
I have also spoken to the two companies that do my analysis, what they are both saying is ........... yup you guessed it ... Whitworth 16 Special
I have also spoken to 3 separate tap manufacturers and what do they say...... WF is Whitworth Form ..... Whitworth Fine does not exist.
Ok with all of the above in mind, I attempted to add these comment to the Thread, along with an appology for getting it wrong about UNS and Whitworth....
As it is locked please can you
A) unlock for me to add my remarks (from me)
B) or add the above comments for me, please can you ensure that you say it was from me and at my request
So there you go and I'm sure now that this is unlocked Martin will pop in and update us.
Then Simon sent me this (which saves me another job I wasn't looking forward to) :
I have re-educated MED for you
Simon

I'll get Simon to check the status of their bolts with them (and also see if he can flog them a couple of the taps that GW has sourced). In fact maybe Mini Spares would like to start stocking this tap.
Still waiting on replies from SC and Swiftune, among others and I still haven't contacted Mini Sport but I'll do that today.
