Model: city
Year:1992
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Hi all,

well as of 2 days ago the engine seems to be 'ticking' more, i can hear it more on the inside of the car, and sounds a bit like a ropey old diesel car.

I have recently done the 'intensive carb clean' with redex where you pour half the bottle into the air intake slowly, and it clears all the crap of the inside, but i don't think that would have made it start this noise or any infact.

the only things i can think of are the rocker gaps, or the fan catching.

just wondered if anyone else had the same problem and knew what it was

sam

oh, and it only seems to be at low revs.

Check your rocker clearences, failing that it could be the timing chain tensioner.

Paul.

Ye, if your ticking is like mine it will be on the other side?

With it ticking over, loosen off the two rocker cover bolts and try to 'move' the cover around and see if it stops?

Well from that description sounds like it's pinking, check the bob weights etc in the dizzy. Probably gunked up and not springing back correctly. So remove the dizzy, strip the points and base plate out, so you can see the bob weights. Then hold the shaft at the bottom, then turn the rotor arm end whilst looking at the bob weights. You should see them moving outwards as you turn the rotor arm end, do they move relatively easily and spring back quickly ? If they don't you want to clean and re-oil them.

would this be making a ticking noise though?

the ticking picks up speed as the car does too, (if that helps at all)

Pinking can be described as a ticking noise by some.
