I have a 1965 mini that i am restoring as i am going along. First thing i want to do when i go back home from uni over easter is to tidy up the gutter around the roof. After looking and having a poke at this one weekend when i was home, there appears to be some sort of sealant present. Obviously this has dried and cracked with time and thus needs replacing?

Is there any form of sealant here as standard?
What would anyone suggest as the best form of attack?

Cheers,

Rich

When I worked on my car's roof I stripped out all the old seal (and the rust underneath it) and used regular seam sealer over the rust treated and primed surface. Seam sealer should be available at places you would buy mixed-to-order car paint and places that sell automotive body restoration supplies. It's a paste like caulk that can be spread by a short bristle brush and/or smoothed by fingertip. After about a day of curing you can prime over it and paint as normal.

Don't apply this or your paint over trapped rust, it will just fester. Be sure to clean up the gutter as best you can first.

Ok, cheers. I was just thinking of getting in there with a wire brush attachment on a drill and seeing where i end up. So if i tidy up as best i can and then Jenolite and primer followed by the seam sealer and further primer i should be ok.

Cheers for quick response,

Rich

You can also use Sikaflex or tigger seal as well

What are either of these sealants? I have had a look for both and Sikaflex appears to be for marine applications and i can't find the other one.

Does anybody have any experience of using either of these alternatives?

Cheers,
Rich

Sikaflex is a trademark name for a whole line of elastomeric seals and glues. I thought the parent company was based in Australia but I could be wrong. They aren't at all common in the U.S. but I hear about them so much on U.K. boards I assumed they were common for you. A lot of their products are for marine use but they also have a lot of sealants for the DIY home repair market. The only common product of theirs I see in the U.S. is a concrete driveway crack sealant. Regardless, google a bit for them and I'm sure you will be able to find a distributor and a product line description.

The other product I believe was a typographical error. Google for "Tiger Seal" instead of tigger seal. Add the keyword "sealant" to your search and you should find them.

"... and I'm the only one". I always liked Tigger.
